SELECTED OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES OF SMALL SCALE BUSINESS IN GOMBE STATE
Abstract
Small scale businesses have been recognized as primary engine of economic growth in the society. However, there are many challenges confronting the operation of small scale businesses. This study focuses on some selected challenges affecting the operation of small scale businesses in Gombe State. The study adopted both primary and secondary types of data. Cluster sampling method was used in selecting one local government area from three senatorial district of the state and random sampling technique was used to arrive at a sample size of fifty (50) respondents. Out of the administered copies, 45 representing 90% were successfully returned while 5 copies representing 10% were not returned. Non-parametric simple percentage was used in the analysis of the data generated for the paper. The study reveals that small scale business owners face a lot of challenges which includes; poor managerial skills by most of the operators, inadequate capital, difficulty in assessing fund, inaccurate record of operation and unfavorable environment. Hence, the paper recommends that Government should do more to support the operation of small scale business; and encourage Banks and other financial institutions to provide more finances to small scale business owners. The study conclude that small scale businesses possess enormous potential capability to improve their operation with more support given at all levels in the society.
