LITERATURE CURRICULUM IN NON-DEGREE PROGRAMMES
ABSTRACT
This study focuses on literary pedagogy and it examines the nature, validity and scope of the teaching of literature in non-degree programmes in Nigeria. It reappraises the teaching of literature in the technical and teacher education sectors of the Nigerian school system with Federal College of Chemical and Leather Technology (CHELTECH) Zaria and Federal College of Education (F.C.E.) Zaria as case studies. The dissertation is premised on the argument that as a prominent subject in the Nigerian school system, literary studies is undertaken in line with policy stipulations enshrined in the National Policy on Education (N.P.E.) and the ensuing curricular developed by relevant supervisory bodies. However, the study discovers that the teaching of literature in some of the sectors of education and institutions is bedeviled by discrepancies that a reconsideration of the literary studies content is required. Using functional theory, the study examines literary pedagogy in relation to the educational philosophy enshrined in the National Policy on Education. This research reveals the fact that there are contradictions between educational objectives and syllabus design. The teaching of the literature programmes studied, for example, does not link literature to the technical orientation of the students and fails to illustrate literature’s profundity in inculcating the affinity between the humane values, which it embodies, and technological culture. This research therefore, proposes the redesign of the literature syllabus in line with the concept of “literature for Specific Purposes” in order for the literature programme to meet the needs of trainees.
