TAX COMPETENCIES, COMPLIANCE COSTS AND INCOME TAX COMPLIANCE AMONG SMEs IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between tax competencies, compliance costs and tax compliance among SMEs in Nigeria. A cross sectional survey design (one short) was used. Data was gathered using a self administered structured questionnaire. Respondents in SMEs from the various areas of Kampala filled the questionnaire. The respondents were drawn from the 3 major SME categories (that is manufacturing and construction, trade and service) using a sample size of381 respondents, data was analyzed using SPSS.

The study revealed that tax competencies are significantly positively related to tax compliance; however there was a negative relationship between tax competencies and compliance costs. Also compliance costs were negatively related to tax compliance. The report concludes that tax competencies influence SMEs’ behaviour to pay taxes. Compliance costs in terms of time and money affect the level of Compliance of SMEs. SMEs with people of high tax competencies will always meet their tax obligations and hence are likely to be compliant.
