Gender and Policing in Nigeria: A Review of the Literature
Abstract
Modern policing, conceived as a male profession from inception, hardly attracts academic attention. The regular media and public attention that it attracts are usually for condemnable activities that accompany exercise of police powers. The academic disciplines that study police and policing are not fully developed in Nigeria. Hence, much of what is written or known about the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) comes from popular writers, novelists, and journalists. The literature is even scantier when narrowed down to the arena of gender and policing in Nigeria. This study undertakes a review of the available local studies on the subject and, supplements and complements these with international and historical insights. The major objective is to identify gaps in the literature and pave way for future studies to fill those gaps. The major finding is that though there is severe paucity of indigenous academic materials on the subject, there is widespread agreement in the literature that policewomen’s face gender-based constraints and disadvantages in their policing roles. The conclusion drawn, based on a consensus in the literature, is that they could be as competent as their male colleagues, if their population is increased and they are given equal opportunities. Several policy measures that can improve the status and roles of policewomen in Nigeria, and thereby make the NPF as a whole, more effective were thereafter presented.
