THE IMPACT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION ON STUDENTS UNDERSTANDING OF DEMOCRACY
Abstract
This study explores the impact of political science education on students’ understanding of democracy, focusing on how formal education in political science influences their comprehension of democratic principles and practices. The research is motivated by the growing recognition of the importance of political education in fostering informed and engaged citizens in democratic societies. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of political science students regarding democracy.
Data were collected from a diverse sample of university students enrolled in political science courses across multiple institutions. The quantitative component involved a structured questionnaire measuring students’ understanding of key democratic concepts, such as participation, representation, rule of law, and civil liberties. The qualitative component included in-depth interviews that provided deeper insights into students’ experiences and the educational practices that shape their understanding of democracy.
The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between political science education and students’ understanding of democratic principles. Students who completed advanced courses in political science demonstrated a higher level of comprehension and critical thinking about democratic processes compared to those with limited or no exposure to political science education. The study also highlights the role of interactive teaching methods, such as debates, simulations, and case studies, in enhancing students’ engagement and understanding.
Furthermore, the research identifies several challenges in political science education, including curriculum gaps and varying levels of prior knowledge among students. Recommendations are made to address these challenges, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and inclusive curriculum that incorporates diverse perspectives and experiential learning opportunities.
This study contributes to the broader discourse on civic education and its role in strengthening democracy. By providing empirical evidence on the benefits of political science education, it underscores the importance of integrating robust political education programs into higher education curricula to prepare students for active and informed participation in democratic societies.
