TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN CRIME PREVENTION IN NIGERIA

Abstract- The exploring how and why certain innovations are adopted and the effects of technology-driven solutions on the problem of crime, technological innovations have been developed to prevent crime and to improve the performance of police. Such extended applications of those techniques have become the threats to individual rights such as right to privacy, freedom of expression, the right to freedom of association and assembly, the right to freedom of movement and the due process rights. Recently, the rate of crime in Nigeria has increased to the level which it has generated public uproar to the government for immediate solution. Government has put in place various security measures and policies to protect the lives and properties of its citizens but to no avail. Armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, rape, arson, terrorism, bomb attacks and other crimes have been the order of the day in Nigeria. To this end, this paper seeks to analyze the impact of technological innovation on crime prevention and effective policing in Nigeria. But we know remarkably little about how and why certain innovations are adopted, and the consequences –both intended and unintended—of technology-driven solutions to the problem of crime. This article provides an examination of a wide range of new technological innovations that have applications in the areas of crime prevention generally, and crime control (by police) in particular. The findings show that understanding the effects of technological change is a crucial issue in contemporary policing because in recent times, many developments have been in place with respect to Information Technology (IT), analytic system, video surveillance systems, DNA testing, and other technologies that have far reaching implications for policing. Also, technological innovations bring about change in types of crime, change in criminals‘ attitude and their mode of operation.
