Abstract

This study assesses the diplomatic strategies employed by Nigeria to combat corruption on an international level. Corruption, a significant impediment to sustainable development and good governance, has necessitated the adoption of various anti-corruption measures by nations worldwide. Nigeria, recognized for its efforts to address this pervasive issue, has utilized a range of diplomatic strategies aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of corruption and enhancing its international reputation.

The research examines Nigeria’s participation in international anti-corruption frameworks such as the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC). It evaluates bilateral and multilateral engagements, including partnerships with foreign governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations, which are critical to Nigeria’s anti-corruption diplomacy. The study also explores the role of key institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) in supporting diplomatic efforts and enforcing anti-corruption policies.

Utilizing a qualitative approach, the study draws on primary data from interviews with diplomats, government officials, and anti-corruption experts, as well as secondary data from reports, policy documents, and scholarly articles. The findings reveal that Nigeria’s diplomatic strategies are multifaceted, involving legal, economic, and political dimensions. These strategies include international cooperation on asset recovery, mutual legal assistance, extradition treaties, and participation in global anti-corruption forums.

The study concludes that while Nigeria has made significant strides in employing diplomatic strategies to counter corruption, challenges remain. These challenges include insufficient coordination among agencies, limited resources, and political interference. The research provides recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts, emphasizing the need for stronger international collaboration, improved transparency, and capacity-building initiatives.

This assessment contributes to the understanding of how diplomatic strategies can be leveraged to combat corruption on an international scale, offering insights for policymakers, scholars, and practitioners engaged in anti-corruption work.

The primary objective of this study is to assess the diplomatic strategies used by Nigeria to counter corruption at the international level. The specific objectives are:

To analyze the role of bilateral and multilateral engagements in Nigeria’s anti-corruption diplomacy.
