INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) represent a group of disorders characterized by the progressive degeneration of the structure and function of the nervous system. Common examples include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). These diseases pose significant challenges for elderly patients and their families, as they lead to cognitive decline, loss of motor function, and ultimately, a diminished quality of life. The increasing aging population globally has resulted in a higher prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases, making them a critical public health concern.
Healthcare workers play a vital role in the management and care of elderly patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Their awareness and understanding of these conditions are crucial for early diagnosis, effective management, and the provision of appropriate support to patients and caregivers. However, studies have indicated gaps in healthcare workers’ knowledge regarding neurodegenerative diseases, which may impede optimal patient care. As the demographic landscape changes, with an increasing number of elderly individuals, it is imperative to assess healthcare workers’ awareness and their approach to managing these complex conditions.
This study aims to evaluate health workers’ awareness and management practices concerning neurodegenerative diseases among elderly patients in a specific geographical area. Understanding the level of awareness among health professionals can inform targeted training programs, ultimately enhancing the quality of care for elderly patients suffering from these debilitating diseases.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rising incidence of neurodegenerative diseases among the elderly presents significant challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. Inadequate awareness and knowledge among healthcare workers regarding these conditions can lead to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and insufficient support for patients and their families. Moreover, the complexity of managing neurodegenerative diseases requires a multidisciplinary approach, which may not be effectively implemented if healthcare workers lack appropriate training and awareness.
In many healthcare settings, especially in developing countries, there is limited emphasis on specialized training for managing neurodegenerative diseases. Consequently, healthcare workers may not be fully equipped to recognize early symptoms, provide adequate care, or offer the necessary support and resources for elderly patients and their families. This gap in knowledge can result in poorer health outcomes and increased burdens on healthcare systems, caregivers, and families.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The primary objective of this study is to assess health workers’ awareness and management practices concerning neurodegenerative diseases in elderly patients. The specific objectives are as follows:
To evaluate the level of awareness among healthcare workers regarding the signs, symptoms, and types of neurodegenerative diseases.
To assess the knowledge of healthcare workers on current management strategies for neurodegenerative diseases in elderly patients.
To identify the training needs of healthcare workers related to the management of neurodegenerative diseases.
To explore the attitudes of healthcare workers towards elderly patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
To recommend strategies for improving awareness and management practices among healthcare workers.
1.4 Research Questions
To guide this study, the following research questions have been formulated:
What is the level of awareness among healthcare workers regarding neurodegenerative diseases affecting elderly patients?
How knowledgeable are healthcare workers about current management strategies for neurodegenerative diseases?
What are the perceived training needs of healthcare workers in relation to managing neurodegenerative diseases?
What attitudes do healthcare workers hold towards elderly patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases?
What strategies can be implemented to enhance awareness and management of neurodegenerative diseases among healthcare workers?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study holds significant importance for several reasons. Firstly, it will contribute to the understanding of healthcare workers’ awareness and management practices concerning neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting potential gaps in knowledge that need to be addressed. 1.6 Scope of the Study

The target population for this study will include healthcare workers who directly interact with elderly patients. 1.7 Limitations of the Study
