A STUDY OF MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES OF SELECTED LOCALLY PRODUCED LUBRICANT (SHEA BUTTER AND CASHEW OIL)

Abstract

This study focuses on the measurement and evaluation of performance properties of selected locally produced lubricants, specifically shea butter and cashew oil. The research aims to explore the potential of these indigenous oils as viable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based lubricants. The performance properties investigated include viscosity, thermal stability, oxidative stability, wear resistance, and lubrication efficiency.

A series of standardized tests were conducted to compare the properties of shea butter and cashew oil with those of commercial lubricants. The results indicated that both shea butter and cashew oil exhibit commendable viscosity indices and thermal stability, making them suitable for applications under varying temperature conditions. Oxidative stability tests showed that these natural oils have a relatively high resistance to oxidation, which is crucial for long-term storage and usage.

Wear resistance tests, conducted using a four-ball tribometer, revealed that shea butter and cashew oil provide adequate lubrication, reducing friction and wear between moving parts. The lubrication efficiency was further assessed through a series of engine performance tests, demonstrating that these oils can effectively reduce engine wear and improve fuel efficiency.

In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that locally produced shea butter and cashew oil possess significant potential as eco-friendly and sustainable lubricants. Their use could not only reduce dependency on imported petroleum-based lubricants but also promote local agricultural industries. Further research is recommended to optimize the formulation and enhance the performance properties of these natural lubricants for broader industrial applications.

Chapter One:

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Lubricants are essential in reducing friction, wear, and heat in mechanical systems, thereby enhancing the efficiency and longevity of machinery. Traditionally, most lubricants are derived from petroleum-based sources, which pose significant environmental challenges, including pollution and resource depletion. This has spurred interest in the exploration and development of sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Shea butter and cashew oil, both locally produced in many regions of Africa, including Nigeria, present promising alternatives due to their biodegradability, availability, and potential performance properties.

Shea butter, extracted from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), is well-known for its applications in the cosmetic and food industries. Similarly, cashew oil, derived from cashew nuts (Anacardium occidentale), has various uses, including in food and cosmetics. However, their potential as lubricants has not been extensively explored or scientifically validated. This study aims to bridge this gap by evaluating the performance properties of shea butter and cashew oil as lubricants, comparing their efficacy with conventional petroleum-based lubricants.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The reliance on petroleum-based lubricants poses several environmental and economic challenges. These include the depletion of non-renewable resources, environmental pollution, and the high cost of imports in countries that lack sufficient petroleum resources. In contrast, locally produced shea butter and cashew oil offer a sustainable alternative. However, their use as lubricants is not widely adopted due to insufficient scientific data on their performance properties. This study seeks to address this problem by providing comprehensive data on the performance characteristics of shea butter and cashew oil as lubricants.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objectives of this study are:

To measure and evaluate the viscosity, thermal stability, oxidative stability, and wear resistance of shea butter and cashew oil.

To compare these properties with those of conventional petroleum-based lubricants.

To assess the feasibility of using shea butter and cashew oil as sustainable alternatives in various lubrication applications.

To provide recommendations for optimizing the formulation and application of these natural lubricants.

1.4 Research Questions

To achieve the objectives, this study will address the following research questions:

What are the viscosity characteristics of shea butter and cashew oil compared to conventional lubricants?

How do the thermal and oxidative stability of shea butter and cashew oil compare with those of conventional lubricants?

What is the wear resistance of shea butter and cashew oil in mechanical systems?

Can shea butter and cashew oil be effectively used as lubricants in industrial applications?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it contributes to the growing body of research on sustainable and eco-friendly lubricants, aligning with global efforts to reduce environmental pollution and dependence on non-renewable resources. Secondly, it promotes the utilization of locally available resources, potentially boosting local economies and reducing import costs. Thirdly, the findings could pave the way for further research and development of bio-based lubricants, encouraging innovation and sustainability in the lubricant industry.

1.6 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is confined to the measurement and evaluation of the performance properties of shea butter and cashew oil. The study will focus on key properties relevant to lubrication, including viscosity, thermal stability, oxidative stability, and wear resistance. Comparative analysis will be conducted against standard petroleum-based lubricants to determine the relative efficacy of the natural oils. The study will not cover other potential uses of shea butter and cashew oil or the economic analysis of large-scale production and commercialization.

1.7 Limitations of the Study

While this study aims to provide comprehensive data on the performance properties of shea butter and cashew oil, it is limited by several factors:

Variability in the quality of locally produced shea butter and cashew oil due to differences in processing methods and source materials.

Limited availability of advanced testing equipment for some of the performance property evaluations.

The study’s findings may not be immediately generalizable to all potential applications without further research and testing.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Lubricant: A substance introduced to reduce friction, heat, and wear between surfaces in mutual contact.

Viscosity: A measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow.

Thermal Stability: The ability of a substance to maintain its properties at elevated temperatures.

Oxidative Stability: The resistance of a substance to oxidation, which can degrade its properties.

Wear Resistance: The ability of a material to resist abrasion or wear during mechanical contact.

1.9 Organization of the Study

This study is organized into five chapters. Chapter One provides an introduction, including the background, problem statement, objectives, research questions, significance, scope, limitations, and definitions of terms. Chapter Two reviews the relevant literature on lubricants, focusing on bio-based alternatives and their performance properties. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, including the experimental design, materials, and methods used for evaluating the performance properties of shea butter and cashew oil. Chapter Four presents the results and discusses the findings in comparison to conventional lubricants. Chapter Five concludes the study with a summary of the findings, recommendations for future research, and potential industrial applications.

By exploring the potential of shea butter and cashew oil as sustainable lubricants, this study aims to contribute to the advancement of eco-friendly technologies and the promotion of locally sourced materials in industrial applications.
