EVALUATING THE EFFECT AND CONSEQUENCES OF POOR ORAL HYGIENE AMONG STUDENTS ATTENDING JOHNKELLY GROUPS OF SCHOOL AGBARHO UGHELLI NORTH LGA DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study evaluated the effects and consequences of poor oral hygiene among students attending JohnKelly Group of Schools, Agbarho, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. Oral hygiene plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health, yet it is often neglected among school-aged children and adolescents. Poor oral hygiene can lead to dental caries, gingivitis, halitosis, and in severe cases, tooth loss, which in turn may affect nutrition, self-esteem, and academic performance.
A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed for the study. A structured questionnaire was administered to a randomly selected sample of students across different classes to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding oral hygiene. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools.
The results revealed that although a significant proportion of students demonstrated basic knowledge of oral hygiene, their actual practices were inadequate. Common problems identified included irregular tooth brushing, limited use of dental floss, and infrequent dental check-ups. The study also found a correlation between students’ socio-economic background and their oral hygiene behavior. Consequences observed included high prevalence of dental plaque, gingival bleeding, and self-reported mouth odor, which negatively impacted students’ confidence and participation in school activities.
The study concludes that poor oral hygiene remains a significant health challenge among students in the study area. It recommends that oral health education should be integrated into the school’s health program, parents should be encouraged to monitor children’s oral care routines, and regular dental screening programs should be conducted in schools to promote preventive oral health practices.
