INVESTIGATION OF IMPACT OF TEACHER EMPLOYMENT AND FREE EDUCATION POLICY ON STUDENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of teacher employment and free education policy on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools. The research seeks to understand how the recruitment, qualification, and adequacy of teachers, alongside the implementation of free education programs, influence students’ learning outcomes. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, using structured questionnaires administered to teachers, students, and school administrators across selected public secondary schools. A total sample of 200 respondents was selected using stratified random sampling to ensure representation across various schools.
Data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the availability and qualification of teachers significantly affect students’ academic achievement, as well-trained and adequately motivated teachers tend to employ more effective instructional strategies. Furthermore, while the free education policy has increased school enrollment and accessibility, it has also led to overcrowded classrooms and inadequate learning materials, thereby posing challenges to effective teaching and learning.
The study concludes that teacher employment policies must emphasize quality recruitment, continuous professional development, and equitable distribution of teachers across schools. Similarly, the free education policy should be supported by adequate funding, improved infrastructure, and monitoring mechanisms to sustain quality education. The research recommends that government and education stakeholders prioritize teacher welfare, school resourcing, and effective policy implementation to enhance students’ academic performance in public secondary schools.
