ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF FINANCING PUBLIC SECONDARY EDUCATION IN ENUGU STATE
Abstract
Financing public secondary education has become increasingly challenging due to rising costs, budget constraints, and expanding enrollment rates in Enugu State. Traditional government funding alone has proven insufficient to meet the growing demands for educational infrastructure, teaching resources, and staff development, leading to declines in educational quality and accessibility. This study explores alternative financing sources that can supplement government funding to support sustainable development in public secondary education. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from education stakeholders, including school administrators, teachers, government officials, and community leaders, to identify and evaluate potential financing options. The study examines sources such as community funding initiatives, partnerships with the private sector, alumni associations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Findings indicate that engaging local communities, establishing public-private partnerships, and leveraging international donor funding could significantly alleviate financial pressures on the education sector. Recommendations are made for policy frameworks that enable these alternative funding sources, improve accountability in fund management, and encourage stakeholder participation in education financing. This research contributes to the discourse on innovative financing mechanisms and offers insights into sustainable solutions for improving public secondary education in Enugu State.
