A HISTORY OF MBE SUB-DIVISION IN NORTHERN CAMEROON, 1900 – 2006
ABSTRACT
This study examines the history of Mbe Sub-Division in Northern Cameroon as an emerging African society from 1900 to 2006. To give the study value, it undertook an investigation to cover issues of lelevance such as migration, settlement pattern, political organization, the society, indigenous education, agriculture and industry in the pre-colonial Mbe Sub-Division. The work discovered that education received a special attention in Mbe Sub-Division between 1936 and 2006 and it became the most fundamental factor that facilitated the early birth of a class of educated elite in this region between 1960 and 1992. It was this class that first cane up to champion the early cause of the economic growth of this Sub-Divisicn even before the democratic era in Cameroon. The study discovered that education further expanded the number of the elite significantly during the first era of the democratic era between 1992 and 2006. The work discusses the elite and the farmers and how they influenced the development of Mbe Sub-Division between 1960 and 2006. It discusses changes and challenges in Mbe Sub-Division as an emerging society and how they subsequently unfolded themselves. It ends by discussing the general attitude of the educated elite seen as the most significant factor negating the economic development of Mbe Sub-Division. It analyses the general arguments, grievances and point of view of the farmers and others regarding the perspective of the elite to the general well being of their community.
