AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL STAFF TECHNICAL COMPETENCE, SCHOOL PROCESSES, PARENTAL INFLUENCE, PEER PRESSURE AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
ABSTRACT
Students’ academic performance is a key feature in education. This work gives an empirical study of relationship between school staff technical competence, school processes, parental influence, peer pressure and students’ academic performance. This work forms a nexus among factors including teachers technical competence(knowledge, teaching and motivational skills), general opinions among peers, parental influence(parental motivation, socio-cultural and socio-political ideologies) affects students’ academic performance.
.A hundred and twenty questionnaires were distributed among students and teachers from selected secondary schools in Nigeria. Interviews and surveys were also conducted.
Primary and secondary data will be used in the analysis. Tables and percentages will also be used as the instrument of analysis
It will be observed therefore that there is a strong relationship between school staff technical competence, school processes, parental influence, peer pressure and students’ academic performance. School staff technical competence, school processes, parental influence, peer pressure have a strong and significant impact on students’ academic performance.
Based on findings, the study recommends that there should be strict monitoring on teachers to vary their teaching methods to suit their needs of the students and also to provide the students with constant feedback on their academic performance. Again, the students should be motivated and orientated to take ownership of their studies by having regular studies and attending school during school days. There should be a general parents’ orientation on awareness of their influence on academic performance of their children.
