AN EVALUATION OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF CONSUMERS TOWARDS MADE IN NIGERIA TEXTILE MATERIALS (2001-2005)
ABSTRACT
Recently the Nigeria Government banned imports of all printed
fabrics in order to protect its own ailing industry. The government said it
took the decision in order to protect the market against dumping when
exported goods are sold below their normal value. In this regards, this
research study was carried out with the aim of critically evaluating the
behaviours of consumers towards made in Nigeria textiles materials
within the period of 2001 to 2005, in order to identify the reasons for
preferences of consumers in Nigeria for foreign made textiles to locally
made textiles. The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant
relationship between the price of textile materials and choice among
foreign or local products. That though it does not mean that foreign textile
are cheaper entirely, but they are moderately priced in relations to their
qualities and durability. Furthermore, there is a relationship between the
quality of textile and the choice of consumers in Nigeria. Also income
status influences the choice and patronage of Foreign textiles and local
textiles materials in Nigeria.
The study comprises of five chapters and data used were mainly
primary and secondary data. And for the purpose of analysis the tools
employed were the percentage and chi-square methods.
