ANALYSIS OF RADIATION PROTECTION MEASURES USED IN PRIVATE AND GOVERNMENT RADIO DIAGNOSTIC FACILITIES IN RIVERS STATE
Abstract
This study provides a comparative analysis of radiation protection measures employed in private and government radio diagnostic facilities in Rivers State, Nigeria. As radiation exposure poses significant health risks, particularly in medical settings, the implementation of effective radiation protection protocols is critical. This research aims to evaluate and compare the adherence to radiation safety standards, the availability of protective equipment, and the overall effectiveness of radiation protection measures in both private and government-operated facilities.
The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from facility audits with qualitative insights from interviews with radiographers, medical physicists, and facility administrators. The findings reveal significant differences in the level of compliance with radiation safety guidelines between private and government facilities. While government facilities generally adhere more closely to established protocols, private facilities show variations in the application of radiation protection measures, often influenced by factors such as funding, management practices, and staff training.
The analysis also identifies key challenges faced by both types of facilities, including insufficient training on radiation safety, lack of modern protective equipment, and inadequate regulatory oversight. Recommendations are provided to enhance radiation protection practices, including the need for regular staff training, improved regulatory frameworks, and increased investment in protective technologies.
Overall, the study underscores the importance of uniform radiation safety standards across all diagnostic facilities to ensure the well-being of patients and healthcare workers alike. The comparative analysis offers valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and regulatory bodies in their efforts to strengthen radiation protection in medical diagnostics.
