ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF MOTORCYCLE SERVICES
CHAPTER ONE
- INTRODUCTION
- BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Transportation is a system or method for carrying messengers or goods from one place to another. A.O. Longe (2008) posits that transportation is one of the aids to trade. It is the process of conveying goods and people from one place to another either through water, road, rail or air. Transportation plays crucial roles in commercial and communication activities because people that are geographically separated are brought together by it.
Ahmed Y.A (2007) the importance of transport in any available environment can not be underestimated. Man as a social and gregarious animal cannot live in isolation but in association, hence, there is the need for interaction, which is enhanced by transport. M.O Olawole et al (2006) transportation is a subset of physical infrastructure… which provides the arteries through which the economic life stream of a society. This might have been one of the reasons why Owu (1964) submitted that “transport has special significance because of the pervasive role of mobility in facilitating other objectives.
Thus, various modes of public transport in towns and cities (most especially the University town like Ado ekiti Akoko Area of Ondo State of Nigeria) such as Taxi-cabs, campus shuttles, private cars (kabu-kabu), bus service most especially the Agolo service widely use in Akoko and Ekiti Areas as a means of commercial taxi town services (CF Iyiola and John, 2003). And due to the low level of public transport services notwithstanding the ever increasing demand by the general public for easy transportation system for their immediate use and conveniency has led to the emergence of ‘Okada’ commercial motor cycles’ services in our towns and cities in Nigeria. According to Ahmed (2007) the main demand for ‘Okada’ transport as an alternative to other modes (of transportation) have been increasing without much attention. Okada business has become a palliative measure to check mate the rate of unemployment of the youth in Nigerian societies, sources of incomes, most convenient and timely considering the nature of our roads and lack of sufficient public means of transportation linking every door e.t.c. However, Okadas like all other motorcycles elsewhere, have a far higher rate of crippling and fatal accidents per unit distance than automobiles to which majority of the victims are male. Yet most riders and passengers are still willing to use the mode.
- STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Okada commercial service has been one of the popular means of public transportation in Nigerian road transport not only in the village but as well as in the nation’s cities and towns. It has been a supplement to other vehicles like: bus service and taxicabs in Nigeria most especially in the targeted research area where the popular “Agolo” taxi bus do not involved in inter streets transport. Okada have greatly contributed to the socio-economic development of the nation. However, it has also contributed in no small measure to increase in crime rate, the rate of road accidents and its attendant effects in Nigeria (Y.A. Ahmed; 2007). Notwithstanding of its contributions to the socio economic and political development of the nation attempts to ban commercial motorcyclist (Okada has been a subject of debates across the nation (Nwaorufaustinus Chilee, 2011).
This study, therefore is designed to discuss both the negative and positive effects of the Okada commercial service on the socio-economic development of the society making Ado ekiti Akoko (A university town) as a case study
- SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study is restricted to the effects of the Okada commercial transport system to the socio – economic development of the nation taking Ado ekiti Akoko Area of Ondo State as a Case Study. This research will cover Adekunle Ajasin University, Ado ekiti roads which link to different street/Quarter (i.e. Akunmi, Okele, Araromi, Ilale, Ibaka, Okusa, Igbelu, Akua, Ibere and Abe quarters) in the study area. It will also cover the effect of Okada Commercial as a mode to transport over other means of transportation in Ado ekiti market (i.e. Okusa and Ibaka Market).
It focus majorly on the Okada and its impact on employment rate and accessibility pattern (flexibility in nature to different residential areas as a major advantage over other means of transportation)
- AIM OF THE STUDY
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Okada on the socio – economic development of Ado ekiti Akoko in Ondo State.
- OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
In order to achieve the aim of this study, the following objectives are pursued;
- Examine the various age group involve in Okada.
- Analysing the impact of Okada on Socio-economic development of Ado ekiti
- To examine the problem militating against Okada forms of transportation.
- To Identity the factors that encouraged Okada transportation in Ado ekiti Akoko.
- To examine the contribution of government in encouraging Okada transportation
- HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY
To test the correlation between effect of Okada on the socio– economic development of Ado ekiti Akoko in Ondo State. In the long run, the following hypotheses are to be tested.
- There is no significant relationship between effect of Okada and socio– economic development of Ado ekiti Akoko in Ondo State.
- There is significant relationship between effect of Okada and socio– economic development of Ado ekiti Akoko in Ondo State
- LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study is how ever constrained by a list of factors. One of the problems courses of this research was the unwillingness of the respondents (both passengers and Okada riders) to disclose information, but with my conviction some responded to it.
In spite of these limitations, however, the success and benefits of the study as a whole were achieved
- GEOGRAPHY OF THE STUDY AREA
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY AREA
Ado ekiti Akoko is one of the traditional towns in Akoko South west local Government Area of Ondo State of Nigeria. It is located on latitudes [7027!N and 7028! N] and longitude [5044!E and 5045!E], it people are Yoruba by tribe, the name Ado ekiti is a modification from its original name: Okun-Igba which means under the Locus beans tree. According to its oral history and tradition, upon migration from Ile-Ife like every other Yoruba town centuries ago in search of a suitable abode they settled under a locus beans’ tree natively called “Igba-tree”. It is bounded in the East by Oka Akoko (Specifically by the Ewalusin in Iware – Oka) in the west by Ikare Akoko, in the North by Oka and Ugbe Akoko, and in the sought by Supare Akoko town. The town is surrounded by hills serving as boundaries in the east, North and the west. The vegetation is of the derived savanna with scattered forests all over the area. Ado ekiti is traditionally made up Akunmi, Okele, Araromi, Ilale, Ibaka, Okusa, Igbelu, Akua, Ibere and Abe quarters and divided into two settlements (Oke Ado ekiti and Isale Ado ekiti) by the Abata stream. In terms of atmospheric condition, the situation remains almost the same as elsewhere in Ondo state. The climate is equally determined by the south west monsoon winds and the North East trade winds. It has mean annual temperature of over 220C with annual rainfall of about 1,270mm (50”) Humidity is relatively high for a good part of the year. Ado ekiti by its location is a nodal town with Federal and State roads run through it to other towns in Akoko and beyond the town prior the relocation of the state University from Ado Ekiti to it, according to Funso Akere (2005) was “a not so – urban environment. Ado ekiti also serves not only as the University town today but as well as one of the meeting points between the Northern and southern parts of Akoko land as a result of its geographical proximity.
Ado ekiti town had a population of 50,000 in 1996 population census (NPC 1996). Most of the populations are engaged in diverse occupation, majority of whom are students, staff of the university, civil servants farmers who are natives, traders artisans and private enterprises among others.
