CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Handwashing has been recognized as a convenient, effective, and cost-effective means of preventing communicable diseases. However, many people overlook the importance of handwashing when engaging in activities that require handwashing due to various factors. The objectives of this study were to assess the level of handwashing knowledge, attitudes, and practices and determine their relationships and how they are affected by sex, educational background, and age.

Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities is considered a basic human necessity for survival and well-being, without these basic needs, the health conditions of millions of people especially children are at risk. However, 2.3 billion and 844 million people across the globe lack access to basic drinking water and sanitation facilities, respectively, causing 842,000 deaths every year, which is undoubtedly a major public health concern. WASH services are considered means of contacting and at the same time preventing diseases [5]. It has been estimated that overall 9% of the global burden of disease could be prevented through improvement in adequate WASH facilities.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Children are one of the most vulnerable groups affected by lack of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. In developing countries, the high mortality rate resulting from diarrheal among children under the age of five was majorly due to WASH challenges.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

To understand the impact of awareness and practices of the who wash initiative on public health safety practices among undergraduate students of health sciences
To understand the relationship between awareness and practices of the who wash initiative on public health safety practices among undergraduate students of health sciences

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: There is no relationship between awareness and practices of the who wash initiative on public health safety practices among undergraduate students of health sciences

H1: There is a relationship between awareness and practices of the who wash initiative on public health safety practices among undergraduate students of health sciences
