CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Atiba local government area of Oyo State in the western part of Nigeria is known for their agricultural practices; cassava is one of the agricultural products that can be found in this area of oyo state. cassava is one of the agricultural products that are consumed by both the rich and the poor; Atiba local government area is among the rural areas in Nigeria that survive mostly through the sales of agricultural products; the agricultural development programs plays a major role in the motivation of the practice of farming in these rural areas of Nigeria; the federal government of Nigeria have put up so many agricultural programs with aims of eradicating poverty in Nigeria especially the people in the rural area of Nigeria.
The people of Atiba local government area is known for their fertile land; production of cassava and fish farming; the federal government of Nigeria wishes to improve the standard of living in this area of Oyo State. The agricultural programs plays a major role in the growth and development of the Nigeria economy through agriculture; some of these agricultural programs includes: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Agricultural Development programmes (ADP), Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the National Economic Empowerment and Development (NEED); all these are for the growth and development of agriculture in Nigeria but for the purpose of the research work, we shall focus on the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP); this programme was establish by the federal government of Nigeria in the year 1963 after independence; the main aim of this programme was to increase the production of agricultural products in Nigeria and to increase the income of most farmers that operates on a small scale through the provision of assistance such as giving them fertilizers, improved seed for good harvest; this programme have being of great important to both the small and medium scale farmers in Nigeria. according to (Ajayi and Ajala, 1997; Garba, 2000; akpabio,2007) they stateed that the agricultural programme aimed at increasing food production for rural dwellers and raising the income level of small scale farmers by making provision for improved seeds, fertilizer, pesticides, credit facilities and infra- structural facilities. From the time of inception of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in Atiba Local government area of Oyo State, the research work has examined the impact it has made in Atiba local government area of Oyo State. the study will discuss the impact of the ADP in the lives of the farmers of Atiba local government areas of Oyo State. according to the (economist 2014, 2015) the major problem of the rural area is lack of good infrastructure; the study will not only look at the impact of ADP but it will also examine its existance and impact on the agricultural development in Atiba local government area of Oyo State.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The people of Atiba local government area of Oyo State perform poorly in the agricultural sector because of lack of funds to purchase some of the farming tools such as fertilizers, sprayers and other machinaries; the federal government od Nigeria through the ADP have made so much effect to improve the standard of agricultural practices in Atiba local government area of Oyo State; out side the oil sector; considering the non-oil sector of Nigeria, agricultural sector is the major contributor the growth and development of the Nigeria economy. According to (Ekpo and Egwaikhide 1994; Oyejide 1998; Okoruwa et al 2003); the Nigeria agricultural export commodities contributed over 75% of the total annual merchandise exports.
1.3 RESEARCH QUESTION
1. What are the roles of the Agricultural Development Programme in the growth and development of Nigeria?
2. Does the Agricultural Development Programme have significant impact on the level of agricultural practice in Atiba local government area?
3. What aid does the ADP give to the people of Atiba local government area of Oyo State as motivation to the practice of agriculture?
4. Is cassava farming more profitable than other cash crops?
5. Does the ADP have significant effect on cassava farming in Atiba local government area of Oyo State?
1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
H0: there is no significant relationship between the Agricultural Development Programme and cassava farming in Atiba local government area of Oyo State.
H1: there is significant relationship between the Agricultural Development Programme and cassava farming in Atiba local government area of Oyo State.
H0: There is no significant relationship between agricultural development programme and decrease in the provision of fertilizer for farmers for the provision of food crops in Atiba local government area of Oyo state.
H1: There is significant relationship between agricultural development programme and decrease in the provision of fertilizer for farmers for the provision of food crops in Atiba local government area of Oyo state.
1.5 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
The very aim of the research work is to determine:
1. The roles of the Agricultural Development Programme in the growth and development of Nigeria.
2. The impact of Agricultural Development Programme on the level of agricultural practice in Atiba local government area.
3. The aid the ADP gives to the people of Atiba local government area of Oyo State as motivation to the practice of agriculture.
5. If the ADP have significant effect on cassava farming in Atiba local government area of Oyo State.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
The research work is a very important one as it will discuss the impact of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) and cassava farming in Atiba Local government Area of Oyo state; the study will will reveal the role of the ADP in the growth and development of agriculture in Nigeria. The benefit of agricultural practices will be discuss in detail; finally the research work will show the relationship between the Agricultural Development Program and cassava farming in Atiba local government area in Oyo State.
1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY
The study will focus on the appraisal of agricultural development programme (ADP) and cassava farming in Atiba local government area from 2007 to 2015.
1.8 LIMITATION OF STUDY
FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS: Due to insufficient finance; the researcher was not able to go all the areas of Atiba local government area of Oyo State but with the few places covered the researcher was able to get meaningful responses from the respondents concerning the impact of ADP on cassava farming.
TIME CONSTRAINTS: The researcher’s involvement in other departmental activities left him or her with limited time for the research work, but the researcher was able to meet up with the time scheduled for the presentation of the research work.
1.9 DEFINITION OF RELATED TERMS

STUDIES ON THE LEAF SPOT DISEASE OF EGGPLANT (SOLANUM AETHIOPICUM L.) AND ITS MANAGEMENT WITH SOME BOTANICAL
ABSTRACT
Field, greenhouse and laboratory studies were carried out at the Department of Crop Science,
University of Nigeria, Nsukka in order to evaluate the leaf spot disease of eggplant and its
management with some botanicals. Field survey of diseased plants was conducted on
eggplant farm. Solanum aethiopicum L. plants were sampled on every 1 m distance along the
diagonal transects for disease incidence and severity. Pathogen isolation from severely
infected leaves was carried out in the laboratory where the diseased leaves were plated on
fresh Potato Dextrose Agar. Identification of the isolated fungi was carried out with the aid of
identification scheme based on their cultural characteristics. Nursery preparation for raising
eggplants used in the green house was also carried out on a sterilized soil. The five most
abundant pathogens isolated were inoculated separately on the seedlings of eggplant in five
replicates.
The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design. Phytochemical
contents of the four plant extracts were determined in the laboratory. An in vitro control of the
organism responsible for the leaf spots was carried out using plant extracts at 0.030 g/ml,
0.060 g/ml, and 0.120 g/ml and 0.250 g/ml concentrations. The experimental design was a
9×4 factorial in a completely randomized design (CRD). The data were analyzed using
analysis of variance (ANOVA). Means were later separated using Fisher’s least significant
difference (F-LSD). Helminthosporium infestans Dur. & Mont, Cladophialophora carrionii
Trejos, Aspergillus niger van Tieghem, Rhizopus nigricans Ehrenb and Neurospora africana
Huang & Backus were isolated from the diseased eggplant leaves. H. infestans recorded the
highest percentage frequency (61.11 %) while A.
niger had the lowest percentage frequency
(5.56 %). H. infestans was pathogenic to eggplant seedlings. The Koch postulate test
confirmed H. infestans as the causal organism of the spots symptoms. The qualitative
phytochemical analysis on the test plants revealed the presence of tannin, soluble
carbohydrate, hydrogen cyanide, steroids, flavonoids, alkaloids as well as glucosides in all
the extracts analyzed. The effect of ethanolic extracts of the test plants significantly (Preduced the incidence and severity of the pathogen. Anti-fungal activity of seed extracts of G.
kola on H. infestans was highest at 0.0120 g/ml concentrations. G. kola could be used as
fungicide to manage leaf spot in eggplant because of its availability and eco-friendliness.

PROBIOTIC EFFECTS OF SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIA ON LAYING CHICKEN FED PALM KERNEL CAKE-BASED DIETS.
ABSTRACT
The study investigated the probiotic effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on pullets
development and hen-day egg performance of the layers. A total of 120 chicks were
brooded for 4 weeks, after which 100 pullets were randomly selected and placed in
4 groups (A-D) of 25 birds each. Groups A, B and C had their feed supplemented
with S. cerevisiae at graded levels of 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 g/kg of feed respectively.
Group D diet did not contain S. cerevisiae (control). The diets for all the groups
contained 25% PKC and they were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. The pullets were
weighed weekly.
At 9th, 15th and 40th week of age, 5 birds were randomly selected
from each pen and 2 ml. of blood collected into an EDTA bottle for haematology.
The blood sample was used to determine packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin
concentration (HbC), total leukocyte count (TLC) and differential leukocyte count
following standard procedures. At 10th and 40th week of age, 3 pullets were
randomly selected from each group and placed in four different cages. The quantity
of feed consumed and faeces voided were determined, proximately analyzed and
used to determine the apparent digestibility of the diets. Eggs were collected three
times daily, weighed and their external qualities were assessed. At the 20th week in
lay, another set of 5 layers were randomly selected from each group and 5 ml of
blood were collected from each bird and allowed to clot. The serum harvested was
used to evaluate the serum biochemistry of the layers. At the 22nd week in lay, ten
eggs were randomly selected from each group and were used to determine the egg

SHEPHERD MOTIF IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR LEADERSHIP IN NIGERIA.
Abstract
This research examines the Shepherd Motif in the Old Testament which has been misunderstood, misinterpreted and subjected to criticism in recent times due to the varying degrees of methodologies by scholars. These scholar use terms like Military dictatorship, aristocracy, autocracy, democracy, kingship, and spiritual leadership to talk on the subject without closely examining the caring motif of the shepherd enshrined in the Old Testament. The objectives of this research are to justify the assertion that shepherd motif especially, Psalm 23 and other related texts encapsulates provision, protection and care as the basis for understanding and interpretation. In Psalm 23 some scholars posit that the shepherd motif reveals a caring and guiding shepherd, while others see the caring motif in vv 1- 4.
For others vv5-6 speaks of a host. Some of these scholars focus on the theological import at the expense of exegesis, while others make input from their common life and practical experiences. In the prophetic literatures most scholars examine the shepherd motif to convey leadership responsibilities of Israel’s leaders who were contrasted with God and his loving kindness. The gap which this thesis attempts to fill is the discovery of the motif of untiring desire for care by the shepherd, which Psalm 23 and other related texts in the Old Testament reveal. The methods used are grammatico-historical exegesis, canonical approach, syntactical-theological method, principles of syntagmatics and paradigmatics. The researcher has also made some modest recommendations to the Church and society in order to draw implications for pastoral care leadership in the Nigerian situation. The contribution of this research to knowledge is that, it has, for the first time fully laid bare the motif of untiring desire for care as the basis for understanding and interpreting shepherd motif in the Old Testament. This novel discovery which is informative, educative and transformative is not found in any of the materials reviewed by the researcher

RESPONSE OF BROILER BIRDS TO DIETS CONTAINING GRADED LEVELS OF RICE MILLING WASTE AND SUPPLEMENTARY YEAST
ABSTRACT
Eighty day-old broiler chicks were used for feeding trial carried out to determine the effect of graded levels of Rice Milling Waste (RMW) and Bioactive Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae) which has been shown to secrete enzymes that help to digest crude fiber and organic matter. This suggest that supplementing broiler ration with bioactive yeast may improve the digestibility and efficiency of
utilization of RMW. The 80 broiler chicks used in this study were randomly distributed in five groups of sixteen birds each. Each group was subdivided into four replicates of 8 birds each. Group 1 was placed on experimental diet made of
1.5 g/kg yeast basal feed and no RMW, Group 2 was fed on a diet of 1.5 g/kg bioactive yeast, basal feed and 10% RMW, Group 3 and 4 were fed feed containing 1.5 g/kg bioactive yeast, 15 and 20 % RMW respectively while group 5, the control had no RMW and bioactive yeast. Feed and water were given to the birds ad libitum.
Daily feed intake and weekly weight gain were determined. Data were collected on nutrient intake, growth performance, feed intake, growth rate, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, apparent nutrient retention, cost benefit analysis and carcass weight. Bioactive yeast supplementation resulted in a significant (P<0.05)reduction in feed intake and cost. The results showed that up to 20% RMW with bioactive yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae) supplementation are adequate for oprimum growth of broiler birds. However, more research work should be done to determine the usage of bioactive yeast in commercial broiler feed production.

RESOURCE PRODUCTIVITY IN ORNAMENTAL PLANTS PRODUCTION IN JOS METROPOLIS, NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
his study was undertaken to analyze resource productivity in ornamental plants production within Jos metropolis of Nigeria. The
study covered Jos North and Jos South local government areas. The specific objectives include: identifying the effect of socio-economic factors on resource productivity, determining costs and returns, and
resource productivity in ornamental plants production.An extensive literature review was carried out to provide an indepth
knowledge of the study. The cluster sampling procedure was used because the nurseries are located in clusters. Data was collected
from the nursery owners. Six respondents from each cluster and five clusters from each local government area were selected using the simple random sampling method at each sampling stage. Each of the two local government areas was administered the 30 questionnaires making a total of 60 respondents.
Results revealed that 60% of respondents were aged between 41– 50, while 80% had some years of tertiary education. Also 60% of the
respondents’ nurseries were less than a quarter of an acre. About 40% had horticulture as their primary occupation, while 40% and 20% had business and civil service respectively as their primary occupation.
The ornamental plants producers made a net farm income of N351,196 per annum and a naira invested gave returns of N1.10.
The regression analysis gave positive coefficients for labour,cuttings, pesticides, water, top soil and polythenes which were
significant (P<0.05). However, manure, fuel transportation and annual rent had negative coefficient. Also the regression coefficient of socio economic variables such as education, age, nursery size were positive and significant. Household size had a positive coefficient but was insignificant (P<0.05). Ornamental production experience had a negative coefficient and was insignificant
