INSECURITY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract.

This paper examines the pertinent issue of insecurity in Nigeria and its implication for socio-economic development. Available data on the level and dimensions of insecurity in Nigeria reveals an increase over time, which constitutes serious threat to lives and properties, hinders business activities and discourages local and foreign investors, all which stifles and retards Nigeria‟s

socio-economic development. This rising wave of insecurity has not abated but has assumed a dangerous dimension which is threatening the corporate existence of the country as one geographical entity. In the light of the above the paper recommends that government must be proactive in dealing with security issues and threats, through modern methods of intelligence gathering, and sharing among security personnel, training, logistics, motivation, and deploying advanced technology in managing security challenges.

INCIDENCE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AMONG MARRIED WOMEN IN YEWA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

The aim of this study was to investigate the social determinants of domestic violence in rural areas as a yardstick for determining the pathways through which sociocultural processes influence women’s susceptibility to marriage. A cross sectional research design was adopted for this study and quantitative data were collected using the Severity of Violence Against Women Scale (SAVAWS) that was developed by Marshall (1992).  Domestic abuse was discovered to be prevalently experienced in rural areas. Also, the study discovered six factors that influence the experience of domestic abuse among rural women namely: drunkenness, financial demand, rebuffed sexual advances, annoyance nature of the male partner, cultural and stereotypical beliefs of the communities as well as a combination of any of these factors. It needs to be emphasized that among these six factors, financial request was mostly pointed out as the reason domestic violence occur in rural areas, which is an indication that rural men commonly experience financial stress. This may be due to the high rate of illiteracy and unemployment among rural women as well as the extended family relationship that exist in rural communities.

IN SEARCH OF THE CAUSES OF INSECURITY IN NIGERIA: A NOTE ON ADMINISTRATIONS AND THEIR AGENDAS

Abstract

Security and insecurity are two sides of the same coin which has been misrepresented in Nigeria. Thus, a representation to reflect the reality of Nigeria is needed. Security is human and structural. For the most part in Nigeria, it is about the structure, and here the influence of the military in governance and in shaping the theory and practice of security cannot be ignored. This influence was in part the function of the international enabling environments and the interpretation and domestication in countries such as Nigeria. In defining security prior to the UNDP paradigm shift in 1994, structure rather than human beings was the focus. To that extent, insecurity has prevailed in Nigeria. Insecurity affects human beings and is powered by corruption and poverty of the leadership and the followers. One such area of insecurity is setting the agenda for development. Looking at the historical trend and focusing on policies since 1999, the paper examines this type of insecurity. The inability of administrations to fulfil their set agendas for improving the quality of lives of Nigerians meant there was nothing to distinguish them from a military regime. This situation not only extends distrust, it enhances insecurity.

IMPLICATIONS OF USING THE MILITARY AND PARA-MILITARY FORCES FOR SECURITIZING NIGERIAN INSECURITIES: THE CASE OF NIGER DELTA CRISIS

Abstract

Nigerian democratic political system is inherent with military features whereby every side of it is militarized in one way or the other. This is not a surprise considering the number of years the country spent under military regime. Even most of its states were created by military rulers. The military features of the country are also found active in its security approach whereby Nigerian military forces are mostly use for both internal and external security. The excessive use and unmerited priorities given to military sector requires a strict assessment in order to reveal the weaknesses of the most preferable security tool using by the government. This paper assesses the Nigerian military actions (JTF) in Niger Delta crisis in order to find out how deteriorated the crisis has become as a result of different military operations carried out by Nigerian armed forces and its implications on overall Nigerian security sectors. This paper reveals the inability of Nigerian military security approach to sufficiently securitize the multidimensional nature of threats inherent in the country. This paper uses the secondary method of data collection and qualitative in method of analysis. The needed information is obtained through examination of different secondary materials such as journal articles, books, magazine, internet sources, and personal observation.

IMPACTS OF FLOOD DISASTERS IN NIGERIA: A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF HEALTH IMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT

ABSTRACT

Floods lead to tremendous losses of property, infrastructure, business and increased risk of diseases. Floods are also the most frequent natural disasters, affecting over 2.8 billion people in the world and causing over 200 000 deaths over the past three decades. The World Health Organization categorised the 2012 flood disaster in Nigeria as the worst flood to have hit the country in the past 50 years. This study reviews flood disasters in Nigeria and how they have been managed over the past two decades. The extensive review of the literature is complemented by data obtained from Ajegunle, a community in Ajeromi–Ifelodun Local Government Area. Because of its proximity to water bodies, its large population and its small land mass, the Ajegunle community is highly susceptible to floods and outbreaks of waterborne diseases. The study also discusses the institutionalisation and development of disaster management in Nigeria. Further, it critically evaluates the disaster management framework and other current disaster management policies as well as the effectiveness and functions of the disaster management focus areas and government response. The study takes a historic approach to flood disasters, linking disaster management to human health with a special focus on flood-related infectious diseases, isolating waterborne diseases as being predominant. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected to develop an understanding of how the people of Ajegunle are affected by flood disasters. This study reveals poorly managed health reforms and argues that in spite of government’s disaster management policies, there is an absence of organised and coordinated institutional structures to plan and respond to flood emergencies. It also revealed that diarrhoea outbreak was the predominant waterborne disease associated with flood disasters. Although Lagos State has been said to have the best flood preparedness plan in Nigeria, it has failed to reduce the yearly flood disasters and their impact on the health of the people. The article suggests a holistic approach by the government to get stakeholders, especially the health sector, more actively involved in disaster management planning.

IMPACT OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION ON LIVELIHOOD SUSTENANCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: THE ART WORKSHOP EXPERIENCE

ABSTRACT:

The focus of this study is basically on the impact that vocational and technical education has on livelihood sustenance and Economic development in Nigeria, using the art workshop training centres as a case study most especially the one established by the Nigerian foremost printmaker: Bruce Onobrakpeya in his home town at Agbarha-Otor, in Delta State of Nigeria. The vocational and technical education opportunities were divided into three broad categories the first is the training offered in private institutions under the entrepreneurship programmes, the second is the training established by governments through formal tertiary institutions such as: the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and the third is the training sponsored by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private individuals and/or religious organizations-the art workshop experiments organized in Nigeria at Oye-Ekiti, Osogbo, IleIfe, Lagos and Agbarah-Otor fall under the last category. It has been observed that the nonpayment approach adopted by the organizers under the third category has been making vocational training programmes more effective, efficient, competitive, flexible and responsive in any community where they are being organized. The conclusion is that the organizers of vocational/art-workshop centres in Nigeria have been focusing on how to satisfy the basic physiological needs of the participants while training, mentoring and motivating them for self development and self fulfilment.

IMPACT OF FRAUD AND FRAUDULENT PRACTICES ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BANKS IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Banking business has become more complex with the development in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which has changed the nature of bank fraud and fraudulent practices. Fraud and fraudulent activities pose a significant problem to the banking industry in Nigeria. The paper, therefore, evaluated the impact of fraud and fraudulent practices on the performance of banks in Nigeria within the period 2001-2011. The main argument is that fraud and fraudulent activities have no effect on bank performance in Nigeria. The paper focused on the twenty-four (24) deposit money banks in Nigeria within the period. The paper employed evaluative research design to determine the nature, magnitude and economic consequences of fraud on banks in Nigeria. Secondary sources of data were utilized for the study. The relationships between fraud cases and other variables were estimated using Pearson Product Moment correlation. Multiple regression analysis was used to ascertain the impact of fraud and fraudulent practices on bank performance in Nigeria within the study period. The paper found that the percentage of mobilized funds lost to fraud was highest between 2001 and 2005. However, due to the stringent measures adopted by the regulatory bodies to tackle the menace of fraud and fraudulent activities, there was a significant decrease between 2006 and 2011. The paper concluded that fraud and fraudulent activities inflict severe financial difficulties on banks and their customers. They reduce the amount of money available for the development of the economy. The paper recommended that banks in Nigeria need to strengthen their internal control systems and the regulatory bodies should improve their supervisory role in order to check and curtail the incidence of fraud and fraudulent activities in the banking industry in Nigeria.
