The Use of Laboratory Method in Teaching Secondary School Students: a key to Improving the Quality of Education
Abstract
laboratory experiences have been reported to promote central science education goals including the enhancement of students’ understanding of concepts in science and its applications; scientific practical skills and problem solving abilities; scientific ‘habits of mind’; understanding of how science and scientists work; interest and motivation. This paper looked at the use of laboratory method in teaching secondary school students: a key to improving the quality of education. It highlighted the concept of science laboratory, quality education. It examined the role of laboratory method of teaching in improving the quality of education, strategies for effective use of laboratory method and the problems facing the effective use of laboratory method in teaching science. The paper recommend among others: Teachers, Laboratory Attendants and Gardeners must be made to attend, at regular intervals, relevant workshops, seminars, conferences and shorts courses that will update and upgrade their knowledge and experiences from time to time and Government should provide Physical resources, and curriculum development that will enhance the use of laboratory method and improve the quality of science instruction in our schools.

The Role of Visual Learning in Improving Students’ High-Order Thinking Skills
Abstract
Various concepts have been introduced to improve students’ analytical thinking skills based on problem based learning (PBL). This paper introduces a new concept to increase student’s analytical thinking skills based on a visual learning strategy. Such a strategy has three fundamental components: a teacher, a student, and a learning process. The role of the teacher includes monitoring the learning process by considering the most productive way to improve higher-order thinking (HOT) skills.Many studies show that students learn from courses that provide information in a visual format. We introduce a meaningful learning strategy for the classroom that promotes the presentation of information in visual formats such as images, diagrams, flowcharts and interactive simulations. Furthermore, we compared visual and traditional learners based on their HOT skills, which were evaluated using the SWOT model. Performance analysis shows that visual leaning tools increased the students’ HOT skills.

The Relationship between Study Anxiety and Academic Performance among Engineering Students
Abstract
Anxiety is one of the major predictors of academic performance. Students with anxiety disorder display a passive attitude in their studies such as lack of interest in learning, poor performance in exams, and on assignments. This research observes the relationship between study anxiety level and students’ academic performance. The test to find out a significant correlation of anxiety and academic performance was has carried out among engineering students. A total 205 males and females student participated in this test. They were second year students from four engineering faculties at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). The study anxiety level was measured using State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Meanwhile, students’ academic performance was measured using Grade Point Average (GPA). The results showed that there was a significant correlation of high level anxiety and low academic performance among engineering students, with significant correlation (p=0.000) and the correlation coefficient is small with r=-.264. Large of sample size required to strengthen the coefficient correlation was suggested for further research. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Open access under CC BY-NC-ND license.

The Impact of Instructional Supervision on Academic
Performance of Secondary School Students in Nasarawa State, Nigeria
Abstract.
This study examined the Impact of Instructional Supervision on Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Nasarawa State with reference to Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). Five research questions were used to guide the study to a rational conclusion. Descriptive Survey method was adopted in which Instructional Supervision and Students’ Academic Performance Questionnaire (ISSAPQ) were used to obtain relevant data from 92 teachers in 37 selected Senior Secondary schools using the simple random sampling techniques. Pearson product moment correlational statistics (Pearson r) and t-test at 0.05 level of significance was used to analyse the data generated and answer the research questions. The study show that regular instructional supervision using robust supervision strategies like checking of students’ notebooks, classroom visitation/inspection by school administrators, checking teachers’ lesson plan/notes and inspection of teachers record keeping have significant correlation with teachers’ performance and academic achievement of students in Secondary Schools. Recommendations like proper alignment of government policies with educational needs of the society, provision of adequate and relevant instructional materials for teaching, regular in-service training for teachers’ capacity development, depoliticization of the free education programmes and proper evaluation of school administrative procedures and educational outcomes were adduced for remediation.

The Impact of Hands-On-Approach on Student Academic Performance in Basic Science and Mathematics
Abstract
Children can learn mathematics and sciences effectively even before being exposed to formal school curriculum if basic Mathematics and Sciences concepts are communicated to them early using activity oriented (Hands-on) method of teaching. Mathematics and Science are practical and activity oriented and can best be learnt through inquiry (Okebukola in Mandor, 2002) and through intelligent manipulation of objects and symbols (Ekwueme, 2007). The study tries to ascertain the impact of Hands-on-approach on the students’ academic performance and the students’ opinion about this activity-based methodology. The general objective is to assess the impact and provide another platform for students to display their understanding of what they have learnt other than the usual written tests with memorized formulae. The activity focuses on Mensuration and Geometry (with 25% questions in each area) and separation of mixtures (pure and impure substances). This paper includes the analysis of the feedback of the pre-test and post-test scores of the students before and after the Hands-on-approach was given as well as students’ interview responses. The study showed positive improvement on both the students’ performance and participation on mathematics and basic science activities and willingness on the part of the teachers to use Hands-on-approach in communicating mathematical and scientific concepts to their students.

The impact of Effective Planning on Teaching and Learning among some Selected Secondary School Students in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State
ABSTRACT:
The goal of this study was to assess the impact of effective planning on teaching and learning among some selected secondary school students in Delta State’s Ethiope West Local Government Area. Seven research questions were developed, three of which were hypothesized to help guide the study. A review of some related literature was conducted. The study sample consists of 300 secondary school teachers from the Ethiope West Local Government Area, which represents 50% of the population. The study employed a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using percentages, means, standard deviations, and the t – test statistic at the 0.05 level of significance to confirm or reject the stated hypothesis. The study discovered that effective planning improves, fosters, smoothens, and has a positive relationship with effective teaching and learning among secondary school students in Delta State’s Ethiope West Local Area. It was also discovered that there is a significant relationship between effective planning and academic performance of secondary school students in Delta State’s Ethiope West Local Government Area.

THE IMPACT OF COMPUTER LITERACY ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ESAN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
The study examined the impact of computer literacy on students’ academic performance in EsanWest Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. To guide the study, four (4) questions were raised and answered. This is to determine the impact of computer literacy in the academic performance of students in the senior secondary schools in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. Data were got with the use of an instrument titled: Questionnaire on Students’ Computer Literacy Level and Computer Usage (QSCLLCU). One hundred and twenty (120) out of 1,200 final year students, representing 10% were used from the fourteen (14) existing secondary schools in Esan west local government area of Edo State, Nigeria. The findings revealed that: computer literate students perform better than non-computer literate; computer literate female students perform better than male students who are also computer literate; computer literate students who are not addicted to the use of computer facilities perform better than those who are addicted; computer literate students in co-educational secondary schools perform slightly better than those in single sex schools. Based on the findings, one of the recommendations was that, all the students in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State should be taught how to use computer facilities to search for valid information related to their academic activities.

Teaching Methods and Students’ Academic Performance
ABSTRACT:
The objective of this study was to investigate the differential effectiveness of teaching methods on students’ academic performance. A sample of 109 undergraduate students from the College’s Department of Economic and Business Sciences was used for the study. Using the inferential statistics course, students’ assessment test scores were derived from the internal class test prepared by the lecturer. The differential effectiveness of the three teaching methods on student academic performance was analysed using the General Linear Model based univariate ANOVA technique. The F(2, 106) statistic (= 10.125; p < 0.05) and the Tukey HSD post-hoc results indicate significant differences on the effectiveness of the three teaching methods. The mean scores results demonstrate that teacher-student interactive method was the most effective teaching method, followed by student-centered method while the teacher-centered approach was the least effective teaching method.

STUDENT TEACHERS’ EXPERIENCES OF TEACHING PRACTICE AT OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING INSTITUTION IN SOUTH AFRICA
ABSTRACT
This small-scale study focused on the experiences of student teachers towards teaching practice in an open and distance learning (ODL) institution in South Africa. The sample consisted of 65 fourth year students enrolled for Bachelor of Education, specializing in secondary school teaching. The mixed-method research design consisting of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used. Questionnaire and individual interview discussions were used as instruments for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze quantitative data. Content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. The study revealed that student teachers experienced challenges with regard to on-time placement in schools, supervision and mentoring. Based on the findings, recommendations were made. Among others was that mentors and university contracted supervisors should be constantly empowered through workshops to work effectively in leading and guiding student teachers. On the issues of placement of students in approved schools, the university should consider implementing a system which will enable students to place themselves online. Placing students in approved schools is a major challenge for the ODL institution in South Africa given the great number of students that have to be placed in schools every year and the slow pace at which the institution is moving to integrate technology in addressing the problem.
