INVESTIGATION OF LEACHATE PLUMES AND GROUNDWATER POLLUTION USING GEOPHYSICAL METHOD IN FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY ABUJA, NIGERIA

Abstract:

The disposal of solid waste in landfills is a common practice worldwide, but the potential environmental impact, especially concerning groundwater pollution from leachate migration, necessitates thorough investigation and monitoring. This research focuses on assessing leachate plumes and groundwater pollution in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria, utilizing geophysical methods to enhance spatial understanding and early detection.

The study begins with a comprehensive literature review, highlighting the global significance of landfill-related groundwater pollution and emphasizing the need for effective monitoring techniques. The chosen study area, the Federal Capital Territory, is characterized by rapid urbanization and increasing waste generation, making it a critical location for such investigations.

Geophysical methods, including Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), are employed to non-invasively explore the subsurface. ERT helps delineate variations in electrical resistivity associated with leachate migration, while GPR provides high-resolution images of subsurface structures and potential contamination plumes.

The objectives of this research include:

Mapping subsurface resistivity variations to identify potential leachate plumes.

Assessing the depth and lateral extent of groundwater contamination.

Introduction

1.1 Background

Landfills play a crucial role in the disposal of municipal solid waste, providing a common solution to the ever-increasing challenges associated with urbanization and population growth. However, the improper management of landfills poses significant environmental threats, with leachate migration being a primary concern. Leachate, a liquid formed by the percolation of rainwater through waste materials, has the potential to contaminate groundwater and, consequently, endanger public health. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja, Nigeria, undergoing rapid urbanization and industrialization, faces escalating challenges in waste management and environmental conservation.

Understanding the pathways and extent of leachate migration in landfills is essential for effective environmental management and the protection of groundwater resources. This research seeks to investigate leachate plumes and groundwater pollution in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, utilizing advanced geophysical methods. The application of these methods will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution of potential contaminants, allowing for informed decision-making in sustainable waste management practices.

Domestic, commercial, and industrial activities all produce solid waste. Open dumps, wasteland farm contamination, ponds, contamination in rocks, and deep underground injection are only a few of the different ways that solid waste can be disposed of. The use of landfill systems as a means of waste disposal is frequently outside of what is generally advised. Due to the creation of leachate and its movement through waste, landfills are sources of groundwater and soil pollution. After some time, a dumpsite experiences biological, chemical, and hydrological processes that cause the waste to weather and, as a result, become a source of pollution. In the FCT, open dump has been the standard procedure. 

In a recent study conducted by on geophysical, geotechnical and water quality investigations of Gosa dumpsite in Abuja, Nigeria to unravel the feasibility of upgrading it to a modern sanitary landfill, inversion results of VES-DC data revealed 3-4 geoelectric layers with the soils classified as well graded clayey-sand to silty-sand with permeability between 5.1 × 10 ????/???? and 1.1 × 10 ????/????, which makes the groundwater prone to leachate pollution. The physio-chemical parameters of the water were generally below the WHO-recommended value. It could be inferred that only the northern part of the area possesses the required geophysical and geotechnical characteristics for upgrading to a sanitary landfill. The high concentration of radioactive elements in the water revealed that the present dumping activities have negatively impacted the groundwater quality

This study is aimed at investigating leachate plume and groundwater pollution within an Open dumpsite at Idugosa, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Nigeria using geophysical and physio-chemical Methods. 

The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja is situated in the central parts of Nigeria, between latitudes 8° 25′ and 9 °25′ north and longitude 6° 47′ and 7 °40’ east. The location study area, Idugosa lies between 9° 03’N and 7° 34′ E with an elevation of 403.1 m and 9° 03’N and 7° 33’ E with an elevation of 394.1 m. 

Abuja is bounded in the north by Kaduna state, in the west by Niger state, in the east by Nasarawa state and Kogi state in the south-west. The basement complex especially at the northcentral part is intruded by Mesozoic calc-alkaline ring complex rock referred to as younger granites, to differentiate them from much foliated, complex and deformed older granites.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The improper disposal of solid waste in landfills poses a significant environmental threat, particularly in regions experiencing rapid urban development such as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. As urbanization progresses, the potential for leachate migration and groundwater pollution increases, raising concerns about the long-term consequences on both environmental and public health. The need for a detailed investigation into the pathways and extent of leachate plumes in landfills is paramount for mitigating environmental degradation and ensuring the sustainability of groundwater resources in the FCT.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objectives of this research are:

LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS OF DECENTRALIZED AND CENTRALIZED RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM IN PARTS OF ANAMBRA STATE

ABSTRACT

This research conducts a comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social impacts of both decentralized and centralized rainwater harvesting systems implemented in selected regions of Anambra State. Rainwater harvesting serves as a sustainable water management strategy, and this study seeks to provide a holistic understanding of the life cycle sustainability implications associated with different implementation approaches.

The LCA methodology encompasses three key phases: (1) extraction and transportation of materials for system installation, (2) system operation and maintenance, and (3) end-of-life disposal or reuse. Environmental impacts, including energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and water footprint, are quantified alongside economic costs and social benefits to provide a comprehensive assessment.

Findings from the study aim to inform policymakers, water resource managers, and community stakeholders about the most sustainable and contextually appropriate rainwater harvesting approach for the region. By considering the entire life cycle, the research contributes to the identification of potential trade-offs and synergies that can guide decision-making towards more sustainable water management practices.

ABSTRACT

          For purpose of clarity, the essay is organised in five chapters. Chapter one introduces the essay and also deals with a general survey of food crop production in the world with a general survey of food crop production in the world at large and Nigeria in particular. Chapter two consist of the literature review.

          The third chapter describe the study areas, the study areas was divided into distinctive operational zones. Chapter four concentrates on the assessment of the schemes of the Authority directed towards food crop production in the study area.

The final chapter is devoted entirely to conclusion and recommendations.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

While food is man’s most fundamental need, it is surprising that ‘’the threat of famine and the fact of hunger have haunted and nations through history’’ (Kissinger, 1974: 262). That is not war, or communism, or the cost of Living, nor exaction, it is hunger’’ (Wilson, 1953: 15). However, the world food crop production is on the increase. Awake (1985:4) has noted that ii is a matter of fact that if one adds up the total amount of food crop produced, then there is enough to supply and adequate quantity and quality of food for all the world’s five billions persons. The same source further observed that since 1974, developing nations as whole increased total food crop production by 3.4 percent annually and the food production in Latin America and Asia increased more  than 32 percent during the last decade and moreover, food crop production increased even in more in the developed world. The situation was summarized by food Report and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) in her 1984 world food report, when it noted that ‘’the total world food output increased at a very slightly faster rate than world population.

          The production record for all the main groups of agricultural commodities was very mixed, for example, the output of root crop and tuber crops decline over this period. This last observation is very significant as it is aptly pointed out the global segregation or national aggregation conceals a number of very serious difficulties. Therefore, what is important is the specific situation in individual countries and it is this that may likely command attention and thus given reason for alarm.

          However, irrespective of the somewhat favourable comment by the FAO, the African Continent is facing a food crises. Many of her countries are unable to feed her population. In many of these countries, drought had hindered efforts geared towards food crop production, and moreover, the global economic recession has further weakened them, making them unable to increase food import sufficiently to off-set the fall in their domestics output. The situation was well described by FAO in her (1984:5) world food Report where it noted that among the events in 1983, the most disturbing was the intensification of the Africa “food crises. That is in other words, the Nigerian agricultural sector is facing one major problem among others, this is the problem of raising the level of agricultural productivity. The issue of inadequate production has reached an alarming proportion that it is now common place other highly placed Nigerians expressing doubts about the ability of the agricultural sector to provide adequate quantity of food for a long and sustained period. The issue of an acute shortage of rice in the recent past bears testimony to the magnitude of the problem of low food product ion. This in part has resulted into a steady rise in food import bill for the country

ABSTRACT

In recognition of the fact that one of the most serious problems facing Nigerian society is that of rural urban migration and much more serious is the problems encountered by new migrants, we have in this research made an effort to examine the following: the socio-demographic characteristics of the Opobo migrants; factors that are responsible for their migrating; the problems they encounter on arrival in the city; processes and mechanisms through which they adjust to the conditions of urban life; what future plans they have.

          From our study, we found out that the level of educational background and the nature of skills that educational background and th3e nature of skills that migrants previously have influenced the type of occupations they engage in when they come to the urban centre. We also found out that voluntary associations; ethnic association in particular; relations; co-ethnics and friends play very important roles in the adjustment of migrants to city life.

          We also discovered that while in the city, the migrant sees himself as an absentee villager who would family return home someday.

But the rate of migration in Africa is greater than that of natural increase. Marigin1 says that the rate of natural increase seems to be declining while that of migration continues to increase. The heavy wave of migration from rural to urban congestion. Urban population concentration and urban areas results in urban areas are areas of opportunity, and people are attracted to them to enjoy their benefits.

          In the case of Nigeria, young and able-bodied youths leaves the rural areas for the urban areas where employment opportunities exist. This may lead to the depollution of the rural areas, or at least to a change in demographic structure. Food production is often adversely affected since it is only the aged (and the very young) who may be left behind. They are not even able to produce enough for subsistence.

          Government has often formulated strategies to limit the rural-urban migration syndrome by building small scale industries in the rural areas. Examples in Nigerian are the modern River Mill and Garry processing Factory in Mbayion-Gboko and Kotic-Youth in Gboko and Vandeikya local government Areas in Benue state2 respectively. These are done to encourage the Youths to be engaged there.

          This study is concerned with the Opobo migrants who leave their home to settle in Port Harcourt, our case study, is an urban area with industries, administrative and commercial opportunities. The industrial, administrative and commercial opportunities. The industries and corporations, government offices and establishments, and the (modern) markers sited at different strategic areas, offer job opportunities to job seekers, and good commercial opportunities to traders, especially those from rural areas.

          The problem of rural-urban migration could be viewed from different perspectives. It could be discussed in relation to different urban settings and also in relation to many problem areas. Specifically this research will address itself to the task of investigating the role of education and contacts in the city in stimulating migration of Opobo people to the city. We will also attempt to find out how the occupations they had at home influences the urban occupations in which they are now engaged. Furthermore, we will attempt to find out how the level of education influence the different kinds of occupation in which Opobo migrants are involved. Finally, we will explore how participation in ethnic associations, the presence of relatives and friends in the city help the migrants to adjust to urban life. Adjustment3, here is used to refer to the individual migrant’s satisfaction with or level of gratification attained in the urban society as well as his outlook with regards to spending his future in town.

          This study is divided into five chapters. Chapters one introduces the work, statement of problem, states the hypotheses, significance of the study. Also methodology, scope and limitations of the work and the theoretical framework are discussed here. Chapter two reviews the existing literature in relation to the study.

          In chapter three, we discusses the brief history of both Opobo and Port Harcourt. It also includes the structure of the economy of both Opobo and Port Harcourt. Opobo migrants in Port Harcourt are also discussed here.

          Chapter four is concerned with data analysis and testing of hypotheses. Mechanisms of adjustments were discussed in this chapter. Summary and conclusions are drawn in chapter five.

Our hypothesis are:

1.   The lower the educational background of the Opobo migrants and the specific nature of their primary skills in the more they are left with the options of adjusting through unskilled labour.

2.   Migrant’s adjustment to city life is a function of ethnic association and extended family system.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

          The main objective of this study to describe and analyse the adjustments individual’s makes to modern conditions of urban development in a Nigerian community. The study aims to help us understand the importance of ethnic associations in the urban centres of Africa and Nigeria in particular, especially as regards the assistance they give to new migrants to the city. The adjustment of migrants in the urban centre is a very good point of take-off for any research on the nature and extent of capitalist penetration in Nigeria. This study is particularly significance in the sense that no work has been done on the Opobo people in any Nigerian city, so it should help other students in further research on the Opobo people. Again, it would help to increase the existing literature on other aspects of the Opobo people. Policy makers would find the study useful in that they will understand the problems encountered by migrants in the city and formulate appropriate policies.

METHODOLOGY

          In this study, data was collected from two main sources-personal interviews and textbooks. The personal interview was chosen as a tool for collecting the date for this research because it can yield deeper and more reliable information than questionnaires which can be easily distorted. In the case of the personal interview, the face to face nature of interview enables the researcher to get a deeper understanding of any information through interviewee’s comments, facial expressions and emotional display, all of which provides visual and auditory clues to the problem. Sometimes useful follow up questions could be added after respondent answers to the initial questions.

          Personal interviews were held with the various categories of Opobo migrant’s in Port Harcourt ranging from the age of fifteen years to forty-five years and above. The content of the interview was on the mechanisms through which adjustment was made and the type of job and level of education they had on arrival in Port Harcourt. Reasons education they had on arrival in Port Harcourt. Reasons from migrating and their socio-demographic characteristics.

          In asking questions about the ethnic associations, we wanted to know the kind of assistance that members or new migrants received from them. We also wanted to know if loans are given to members in the event of some unhappy circumstances such as business failure, death of a member etc.

          The data was collected during a survey that was carried out in the months of August, September, October, December, 1986 and March, 1987. These months were chosen because they were the most convenient periods for us. The respondents were interviewed in their homes and places of work. As regards the number of migrants interviewed, of course, not all Opobo migrants population living in Port Harcourt were interviewed as time would not permit. Thus, the sample size used was 70. This includes both males and females.

          The respondents were selected accidental sampling (that is, the method of availability). Sometimes, we used the help of another migrant who introduced us to other people he knows. On other occasions we simply walked up to areas where an Opobo man lives and/or works to conduct the interview. At the beginning of each interview we explained the purpose of the research and how long the interview would last.

AQUIFER HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS AND VULNERABILITY ESTIMATION FROM VERTICAL ELECTRICAL SOUNDING: A CASE STUDY OF ORU AND ENVIRONS,SOUTH EASTERN NIGERIA

Abstract:

Aquifer hydraulic characteristics and vulnerability assessment are essential for sustainable groundwater management, particularly in regions facing increasing water demands and environmental stresses. This study focuses on the estimation of aquifer hydraulic parameters and vulnerability using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) data in the Oru and its environs, located in South Eastern Nigeria.

Vertical Electrical Sounding is a geophysical technique widely used for subsurface investigations, particularly in hydrogeological studies. In this research, VES data were collected at strategic locations within the study area. The data were interpreted using the Schlumberger array to derive the aquifer parameters, including the hydraulic conductivity (K) and transmissivity (T).

The results reveal spatial variations in aquifer hydraulic characteristics across the study area. The estimated values of hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity provide valuable insights into the potential groundwater yield and flow characteristics of the aquifer system in Oru and its environs. Additionally, the vulnerability of the aquifer to contamination was assessed using the DRASTIC method, which considers various factors such as Depth to Water Table (D), Net Recharge (R), Aquifer Media (A), Soil Media (S), Topography (T), Impact of Vadose Zone (I), and Hydraulic Conductivity (C).

The vulnerability assessment indicates areas of varying degrees of vulnerability to contamination, highlighting zones where groundwater resources are at higher risk. These findings are crucial for groundwater resource management, land-use planning, and the development of appropriate mitigation measures to protect the aquifer system.

This study contributes to the existing knowledge by providing a case study of aquifer hydraulic characteristics and vulnerability assessment using VES data in South Eastern Nigeria. The results offer valuable insights for policymakers, water resource managers, and stakeholders in sustainable groundwater management practices in the region.

LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS OF DECENTRALIZED AND CENTRALIZED RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM IN PARTS OF ANAMBRA STATE

ABSTRACT

This research conducts a comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social impacts of both decentralized and centralized rainwater harvesting systems implemented in selected regions of Anambra State. Rainwater harvesting serves as a sustainable water management strategy, and this study seeks to provide a holistic understanding of the life cycle sustainability implications associated with different implementation approaches.

The LCA methodology encompasses three key phases: (1) extraction and transportation of materials for system installation, (2) system operation and maintenance, and (3) end-of-life disposal or reuse. Environmental impacts, including energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and water footprint, are quantified alongside economic costs and social benefits to provide a comprehensive assessment.

Findings from the study aim to inform policymakers, water resource managers, and community stakeholders about the most sustainable and contextually appropriate rainwater harvesting approach for the region. By considering the entire life cycle, the research contributes to the identification of potential trade-offs and synergies that can guide decision-making towards more sustainable water management practices.

This research not only advances the academic understanding of rainwater harvesting systems but also provides practical insights for sustainable water resource management in Anambra State and similar regions facing water scarcity challenges. The study contributes to the ongoing discourse on integrating environmental, economic, and social considerations in water infrastructure planning and underscores the importance of context-specific solutions for achieving long-term sustainability.

Abstract:

Effective landfill site selection is critical for waste management planning to mitigate environmental impacts and ensure sustainable development. This research employs Geographic Information System (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) techniques to identify suitable landfill sites for Modibo Adama University Yola, considering environmental, social, and logistical criteria. The integration of GIS allows for spatial analysis and visualization, while MCDM methods provide a systematic approach for decision-making.

The study begins by establishing a comprehensive set of criteria, including proximity to populated areas, land use, geological considerations, and transportation infrastructure. GIS is then utilized to create spatial layers representing these criteria. Weighted overlays and suitability analysis within the GIS framework aid in identifying potential sites based on predefined criteria.

Multi-Criteria Decision Making techniques, such as Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), are applied to assign relative importance to criteria and rank potential landfill sites. The synthesis of GIS and MCDM enables a robust decision-making process, considering both spatial and non-spatial factors.

The research contributes to sustainable waste management practices by providing a systematic approach to landfill site selection that minimizes environmental impact and maximizes efficiency. The methodology employed in this study can serve as a valuable tool for decision-makers and urban planners involved in waste management and environmental conservation.
