PROFESSIONAL STATUS AND COMMITMENT OF LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The technical profession of science and laboratory technology is a skill-based competence that is vital to the national economy and technology growth (URT, 2000). Technicians in science have an essential role to play in current and future scientific disciplines. Technicians’ practical skills, experiences and knowledge are basic needs in science, as these are more detailed than for common researchers and science teachers. Like any other country, in Tanzania there is a general requirement throughout the country for skill-based competence in scientific areas such as academics & research institutions, manufacturing & processing industries, and government agency laboratories. The availability of skilled and competent personnel is crucial in meeting URT’s 2025 vision, Five Year Development Plan (FYDP) and the Big Results Now (BRN) strategies.

The Technical Education and Training Policy (1996) established three main purposes for technical secondary schools to ensure that (a) an appropriate and cost effective vocational education is introduced to replace the diversified course package, (b) teaching of science and technology is strengthened in technical secondary schools and (c) training standards are prepared for different fields of vocational education to be taught in current technical secondary schools. However, recently, most technical secondary schools and colleges have been transformed into non-technical schools, universities or university colleges.

Experimental Laboratory technology is one of the most recently included subject content of the curriculum Laboratory technology it inclusion, Laboratory technology has continued to occupy its separate place and some time, it is often neglected in some schools even where the various branches of Laboratory technology are taught they are done without regard for the basic requirement needed in spite of the effort made during the present decade by the federal and state government of Nigeria to give Laboratory technology subject their role in education note much has been achieved in some selected schools in Shagamu Local Government Areaof Lagos state the effect of the deficiency in teaching Laboratory technology in schools are particularly evident in developing countries such as Nigeria

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

To which extent has the number of students per class in Nigeria which is too unwieldy affect the effective teaching of Laboratory technology

In what way does in adequate use of specimens material and diagrams makes ineffective the teaching of Laboratory technology

Could lack of improvised teaching and by teacher cause ineffective teaching which lead to the students poor performance in Laboratory technology

Can bad attitude of teachers towards work affect the effective teaching of Laboratory technology

Could lack of practical work causes ineffective teaching of Laboratory technology

PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of this study is to find out the problem militating against the teaching of Laboratory technology the schools

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The teaching of Laboratory technology has not been as effective as it output to be is easily of students in schools it is therefore necessary to diagnose the various factors responsible for this unheeding state of affairs and proper means by which the anomalies could be arrested

The importance of Laboratory technology in the life of man need to be over emphasized therefore if the subject is note effectively taught, the rudiment that are necessary for development of the basic concept of Laboratory technology would be lacking at the secondary schools level and this could permeate the other state of the nation’s educational level it is believed that the importance of Laboratory technology is well under stood and all the factors responsible for it’s unhealthy development are quickly nipped on the bud it would be possible to build a Laboratory technology culture oriented society which will augur well for the healthy development of the nation

SCOPE AND DELIMITION OF STUDY

The study will be restricted to Shagamu Local Government Areain Benin City Lagos state a large number of primary school is located there hence Shagamu Local Government Areawill serve as the centre of the study this will enable one to know the factor militating against effective teaching of Laboratory technology

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

Child labor is an important global issue associated with poverty, inadequate educational opportunities, gender inequality, and a range of health risks.1 Child labor is defined by the relevant international conventions (UNICEF’s Convention on the Rights of the Child,2 International Labor Organization [ILO] Convention 138,3 and especially, 1824) not by the activities performed by the child, but by the consequences of such activities (exceptions are the so-called unconditional worst forms of child labor such as prostitution and bondage, as noted in ILO Convention 182). For instance, work affecting a child’s health and schooling should, according to these conventions, be eliminated.5 Identifying the health effects of child labor is essential because it enables policymakers to decide which types of child labor to target for eradication.

The ILO estimates that there are approximately 250 million child laborers worldwide, with at least 120 million of them working under circumstances that have denied them a childhood and in conditions that jeopardize their health and even their lives. Most working children are ages 11 to 14 years old, but as many as 60 million are between the ages of 5 and 11.6 Although the exact numbers are not known, available statistics indicate that approximately 96% of child workers reside in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America; there are also pockets of child labor in many industrialized countries.5,7,8 In spite of a reported decline in child labor during the period 1995 to 2000,9 child labor remains a major concern.

Most child laborers begin working at a very young age, are malnourished, and work long hours in hazardous occupations; frequently they do not attend school. They receive very low wages or are unpaid, and their income or help is usually essential for family survival. They are mainly employed in the informal sector, with agriculture accounting for more children workers than any other sector. It is estimated that, in developing countries, at least 90% of economically active children in rural areas are employed in agriculture.10 Recent ILO statistics from 20 developing countries categorized the proportion of economically active children aged 5 to 14 years as employed in agriculture, animal husbandry, and related work at 74% (73.3% of boys and 78.8% of girls).11

Short term, the most obvious economic impact of child labor at the family level is an increase in household income. Long term, the underaccumulation of human capital caused by low school attendance and poor health is a serious negative consequence of child labor, representing a missed opportunity to enhance the productivity and future earnings capacity of the next generation.12 Child laborers grow up to be low-wage–earning adults; as a result, their offspring will also be compelled to work to supplement the family’s income. In this way, poverty and child labor is passed from generation to generation.13,14

Although child labor is recognized as a global health problem, research on its health impact on children has been limited and sometimes inconsistent. In 1998, Graitcer and Lerer published the first comprehensive review of the effect of child labor on children’s health by extrapolating data from the Global Burden of Disease Study.15 The occupational mortality rate among children matched the adult occupational mortality rate, such that the occupational mortality rate indicates mortality associated with child labor. In another study, in 2000, Graitcer and Lerer did not find any differences in the health status of working and nonworking Egyptian children in the short run (the children were not followed to adulthood).16 A 2003 report on children’s work in Morocco,17 Yemen,18 and Guatemala,19 and a review developed under the aegis of Understanding Children’s Work Project20 provide an overview of the nature and extent of child labor, its determinants, and its consequences for the health and education of children in these countries. Several case–control and cohort studies have reported on the association of child labor, impaired growth, and malnutrition.21–26

Urban centres which have degenerated from centres of excellence to centres of squalor which are further characterized by inadequate social services, deplorable living conditions, high risk of disease outbreak, deprived land use planning, exposure to violence and other social vices. 

Studies have shown that there has been an annual incremental formation of slums in Nigerian cities [1,2] Rivers State plays a major role because of its strategic economic importance to the country as the hydrocarbon hub and a centre of attraction for all and sundry.  Slums formation in Nigeria are wrought with hasty urbanization, poverty, substandard urban housing stock, near non-existence of enforcement of urban development guidelines by city management authorities, lack of proper housing stock and maintenance. [3] asserts that slums have been theorized as collection of structures or an area encumbered by overcrowding, deterioration, unhygienic surroundings, absence of basic and essential facilities like potable water, standard educational and health facilities, drainage system, leisure centres, post office, markets and the like. 

However, one sure way of coming out of this quagmire biased on town planning orientation is the application of the appropriate development control tools by the relevant authorities, especially the local planning authorities. These planning authorities when established will be saddled with the responsibility of enhancing the quality of the environment, improve the conditions of the housing stock, encourage ordered development and improve liveability within the cityscape. Notwithstanding the strategic importance of the application of these development control measures in the balancing of the physical environment, there exist other factors encumbering the effectiveness of this notion and thus made the entire process a mirage and a mismatch to the capacity of development control process to city growth management.

ABSTRACT

Prion diseases, also known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs), are fatal neurodegenerative disorders with characteristic sponge-like microscopic appearance in the infected brain. They are caused by a protein-only particle consisting of an abnormal isoform (PrPSc) of the normal ubiquitous cellular prion protein PrPc. Prion diseases affect both human and animals, and can cause interspecies transmission. In humans, there are six different phonotypes of prion diseases, including kuru disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), Gerstmann- Sträussler-Scheinker (GSS) syndrome, Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI), variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and variably protease sensitive prionopathy (VPSPr). In herbivorous animals and carnivorous animals, there are five well-studied prion diseases including scrapie, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), Transmissible Mink Encephalopathy (TME), and Feline Spongiform Encephalopathy (FSE). As the pathogen of the diseases, PrPSc accumulates in tissues and body fluids of affected individuals, and serves as the most reliable marker for diagnosis of priondiseases. A variety of bioassays, including immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) have been used in prion disease diagnosis and surveillance; however, none of them is sufficient for preclinical diagnosis. Recently improved in vitro PrPSc amplification methods, such as protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA), amyloid seeding assay (ASA), and real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QUIC), showed greatly increased sensitivity. In particular, RT-QUIC and PMCA have been applied to noninvasive detection of PrPSc in urine or nasal swab recently, shedding light on the uses of

the two methods in early diagnosis and surveillance of prion diseases.

PREVALENCE OF UROPATHOGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI & STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS AMONG PATIENTS WITH CASES OF URINARY TRACT INFECTION ATTENDING BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, MARKUDI

ABSTRACT

 In the present study, we investigated the prevalence of few bacterial organisms associated with urinary tracts infection and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. Total of Ninety (90) midstream urine samples were collected from outpatients with respect to their age group, gender and marital status attending health facility in Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi. Each 0.1ml of urine sample was cultured on MacConkey agar and colonies showing lactose fermentation were subsequently subcultured on Eosin Methylene Blue Agar to obtain a pure culture of E. coli whereas S. aureus was isolated by inoculating 0.1 ml of urine sample on Cysteine Lactose Electron Deficient (CLED) agar and subsequently subcultured into Manitol Salt Agar to obtain pure culture. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and paired t-test was carried out using IBM SPSS STATISTICAL version 22. Based on the result obtained, 33(36.67%) prevalence of E. coli and S. aureus was observed. E. coli has the highest occurrence of 19(95.00)% while S. aureus has 14(70.00%). WEIGHT CHANGES AND HISTOMORPHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF MARIJUANA ON THE BRAIN OF ADULT WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West Local Government area of Edo state. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of marijuana on the heart of wistar rats.  The study involved twenty four growing wistar rats having weights between 250g-275g divided into 4 groups; control and groups 1-3, comprising of 6 rats each. The control group received only grower’s mash and distilled water while groups 1, 2 and 3 received 0.02mg/kg body weight, 0.04mg/kg body weight and 0.06mg/kg body weight doses of marijuana respectively. The histological examination showed that oral administration of graded doses of marijuana over a period of 3 weeks presented no damages to the control group. Group 1 fed with 0.02mg showed normal brain cytoarchitecture and that of Group 2 fed with 0.04mg showed nothing of pathological significance while the last Group 3, fed with 0.06mg of the substance showed mild fibrosis, nuclear eosinophilia and chromatolysis indicative of neurotoxicity. Consequent upon the findings of this study, it was concluded that marijuana induces alterations and disruptions in the normal histological architecture of the brain of wistar rats (in high doses) and these disruptions could lead to increased risk of cerebro-spinal injury and damage to the rats.

DISTRIBUTION OF ABO, Rh (RHESUS) BLOOD GROUPING AND HEPATITIS B AMONG BLOOD DONORS WITH NATIONAL BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICE KADUNA

ABSTRACT

ABO and Rh blood group systems are of major clinical significance amongst the thirty (30) human blood group system. The Distribution of ABO, Rh blood grouping and hepatitis B virus among blood donors with National Blood Transfusion Service, Kaduna was carried out. Two hundred voluntary blood donors (200) were used. Questionnaire was used to obtain the respondents’ bio-demographic data. Microplate technique was used for ABO and Rh blood grouping tests and ELISA kit (Monolisa HBsAg ULTRA) for hepatitis B virus test. The results showed that blood group O donors had (47.0%, group A (31.5%), group B (17.0%) and group AB (4.5%).  Rh D positive has (95.0%) and RhD negative (5%).  Reactive hepatitis B (12.5% and non-reactive hepatitis B (87.5%).
