THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN ADDRESSING MILITANCY IN BAYELSA STATE OF NIGERIA

Abstract

This paper examined the role of education in addressing militancy in Bayelsa State. Efforts geared toward addressing the issues of militancy through the use of the Nigerian military forces had failed rather resulting to more violent conflict in the area. The paper discussed the causes of militancy such as oil based marginalization of the people, environment degradation, unemployment and poverty in the area. The paper pointed out the consequences of militancy. This has led to destruction of oil pipelines, violence and hostage taking, collapse of economy activities and insecurity in the state. To remedy the causes and consequence of militancy in Bayelsa State, education which is the most powerful weapon in addressing societal problems and transforming life should be used, by inculcating self reliance for economic and national development including peace and security. Education can become the secret key to government and policy makers in addressing militancy in Bayelsa State.

THE MANIFESTATIONS OF GRAND CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA’S FOURTH REPUBLIC AND ITS IMPLICATION ON NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT: The central aim of this paper is to highlight how grand corruption is manifested in Nigeria and its implication for national development. This is based on the premise that there has been tendency for literatures on corruption to propose solutions to combat corruption without considering the context and form which corruption takes place. It achieves its aim by first clarifying the concept of corruption and grand corruption. It also adopts the neo-patrimonial theory to explain how grand corruption are manifested in Nigeria. The study analyses secondary and empirical sources of data through qualitative methods. It argues that in spite of Nigeria’s transition to democracy, cases of grand corruption have been reported in the different governments. This has left devastating consequences in the country such as slow economic growth, mass poverty and unemployment, political and social instability, a recycled culture of corruption, diminished national prestige and loss of government legitimacy and national assets. It recommends a strong political will to fight corruption beyond propaganda and a radical sanitization of the political system in Nigeria.

HISTORY OF CORRUPTION AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF NIGERIA

Abstract

Nigeria, with a population of over 140 million people, is the most populous country: in Africa: one in five SubSaharan Africans is a Nigerian. The country is also rich in both human and natural resources. Billions of dollars were generated yearly from the sale of crude oil and vet nothing to show for this huge revenue in terms of infrastructural development and the living standards of Nigerians. This state of affairs has been attributed to the prevalence of corruption. This paper examines phenomenon called corruption. It discusses the causes and impacts. The paper attributed the causes of corruption in Nigeria to socio-cultural and the political and economic situation of the country. The paper contends that corruption has been responsible for the instability of successive Nigerian administration since independence to date. Besides, it creates negative image and loss of much needed revenue for developmental purposes: it devalues the quality of human life: robs educational and health sectors of revenues; it slows down administrative processes thereby making the execution of government policies to be ineffective. The paper recommends among others, enlightenment of the citizen on the danger of excessive materialism and the culture of “get rich quick”. Besides, the property of any corrupt official should be confiscated and should also be imprisoned for life to serve as a deterrent to others. THE EFFECT OF CORRUPTION ON ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY AND GROWTH IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Corruption in contemporary era has dent growth and economic sustainability in developed and especially developing economies. Such is evidence in the Nigerian context. In 2013 cum 2014 the economy was rated one of the fastest growing in relation to her vision 2020:20. The reverse is the case owing to corruption undermining economic growth and sustainability in Nigeria. This study then, scrutinize the extent upon which corruption have undermine economic growth proxide by (GDP) as its prime objective. The study adopts the Classical Linear Regression Model (CLRM) by means of secondary data from 1999-2016 with an array of other universal/customary and analytical tests. The R2 of the CLRM result shows that 94% of the variation in GDP is explained by the prime regressors. Corruption, and exchange was established positive and significant affiliation, while unemployment, and inflation rate negative and non-significant affiliation. The above therefore conforms to empirical and conventional theoretical viewpoint to corruption undermining growth and sustainability habitually and globally.

THE EFFECT OF CORRUPTION ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: 1996-2016

Abstract

The paper focuses on the relationship between corruption and poverty as well as impact of corruption on economic growth in Nigeria for the period, 1996-2016. Corruption is a canker worm that has reduced development in all facets of the economy as it has eaten deep to the extent that major economic indicators are negatively affected. The study relied on both descriptive and econometric methods to analyze the data. Specifically, the study uses ordinary least square method to explore the contemporaneous dynamics. The study finds that poverty is positively and significantly responsive to corruption. It was also observed that corruption perception index and corruption rank exerted negative impact on economic growth. The study argued that the trends of corruption perception index and the country’s annual ranking as among the most corrupt countries in the world has tended to undermine economic growth. The study noted that anti-graft agencies (EFCC and ICPC) must been adequately funded and equipped in order to mitigate against corruption without government interference.

STUDIES OF THE EFFECT OF OLD AGE ON INVITRO BLOOD CLOTTING IN YENAGOA BAYELSA STATE NIGERIA.

Abstract

Aging has been defined as “a progressive unfavourable loss of adaption, leading to increased vulnerability, decreased viability, and decreased life expectancy. Enablers of aging could be retarded as a result of proper medical intervention of the old aged. The aim of the research is to provide interventions that could also serve a retarder to aging and in the management of the aged. A total of 300 subjects were recruited into the study, 200 subjects constituted the aged defined based on 65 and above years. 100 subjects constituted the  middle aged defined  based on age range of 20-33 years.   Samples were divided into two groups, group A constitutes the control (middle aged) and group B constitutes the aged.  Platelets, serum calcium and clotting time were analyzed using WHO approved methods.  The mean and SD of platelet count of group A 379±137 as compare to group B of 210±122. The CT for group A was 4.8±1.1 as compare to group B of 9.2±1.6. While serum calcium was  2.3±0.30 in the control as against the aged of  1.8±0.34. A statistical significances p<0.05 were observed for all the studied parameters. However, the platelets count and serum calcium had a decline in the aged as compared to the middle aged. Clotting time showed a significant increase. The decline in platelets count of the aged was attributed to decline in the thrombopoietin, senile production sites of platelets precursors and components. The prolonged CT observed for the aged was hinged on the decline in platelets count, coagulation factors and serum calcium concentration. Based on these finding, aged are advice not to expose themselves to injuries and cut. Also heath care providers should treat all injuries in the geriatrics as an emergency.  Keywords: Platelets, clotting time, geriatrics, calcium

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF FACTORS INFLUENCING TEACHING AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLIS, BORNO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study examined students’ perception of factors influencing teaching and learning of mathematics in senior secondary schools in Maiduguri Metropolis of Borno State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to determine the extent to which students perceived: qualification, method of teaching, instructional materials and attitude of both teachers and students influence the teaching and learning of mathematics in senior secondary schools. The study used a sample of 1500 males and 1100 females students from six selected senior secondary schools in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State, Nigeria. The instrument used for data collection was a selfdeveloped questionnaire measuring students’ perception of factors influencing teaching and learning of mathematics. It had a reliability index of 0.81. To analyze the data collected, the research questions were answered using descriptive statistics such as simple frequency, mean and standard  deviation. The results indicated that qualification of mathematics teachers, teaching method, and instructional materials were highly perceived by students as important determinants of their success in learning. Also, students’ attitude towards mathematics teaching and learning was an important factor in the performance of students.  Based on the results of this study, it was recommended that: There is need to improve the quality of mathematics teachers.  Government of Borno State should embark on serious in-service training of mathematics teachers to equip them with skills for teaching mathematics in secondary schools. Also there is need for mathematics teachers to try and understand the perceptions of their students and try to adopt instructional strategies that whatever student perceived as easy would really turn out to be easy and whatever is difficult may be properly addressed to motivate and encourage students to see the need in learning mathematics and improve their performance. PERSISTENT RISE IN CORRUPT PRACTICES IN NIGERIA: THE IRONY OF FIGHTING CORRUPTION IN PRESIDENT BUHARI’S ADMINISTRATION (2015-2020)

Abstract

President Buhari came to power in the 2015 elections and one of his main campaign promises was to fight the corruption that was seen as rife in his predecessor’s administration. However, five years after, corruption still subsists as one of the greatest challenges facing Nigeria. In recent time, public attention has been drawn to the spectacles of corruption cases in Nigeria especially in the agencies of government. This has shown that moral values are fast diminishing among the people. As it were, integrity, honesty and dedication to duty have collapsed in the society and particularly among politicians, political office holders and government officials. The menace of corruption in Nigeria poses a great threat to the development of the country.  Therefore, this paper assessed the trend of corruption under Buhari’s administration and the efforts made to tackle corruption in Nigeria from 2015 to 2020. The assessment was achieved through the adoption of the narrative-textual case study (NTCS) research method that sources the required data on the phenomenon of study from secondary sources like official reports, internet, online book, newspaper and journal publications. It was discovered that the Buhari’s administration has made some efforts in fighting corruption by introducing anticorruption measures, policies and legal frameworks such as the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS), Treasury Single Account (TAS), Whistleblowing Policy, Code of Conduct Bureau and Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative amongst others to fight against corruption. However, based on the evidence of increasing cases of corruption in recent time, these efforts seem not to have yielded positive results. Therefore the paper recommends among other things, that President Buhari should not be selective in his corruption fight rather he should tackle the menace of corruption holistically irrespective of political affiliations or ethnic affinity of those involved in corrupt acts.
