ENHANCING MEDICATION SAFETY -EVALUATING THE ROLE OF PHARMACY TECHNICIANS IN THE PREVENTION OF MEDICATION ERRORS

Abstract

Medication safety is a fundamental aspect of quality healthcare delivery, as medication errors remain a leading cause of preventable harm to patients worldwide. This study evaluates the role of pharmacy technicians in enhancing medication safety and preventing medication errors across different stages of the medication use process. The study aims to identify the specific contributions of pharmacy technicians in prescription verification, dispensing, patient counseling, inventory management, and clinical support, while also assessing the challenges that limit their optimal involvement in patient safety initiatives.

A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining quantitative data from structured questionnaires administered to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with qualitative insights from interviews and observational assessments in selected hospital pharmacies. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to determine the relationship between technician involvement and the rate of medication errors.

Findings revealed that pharmacy technicians play a significant role in minimizing dispensing and labeling errors, detecting potential drug interactions, and ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures. The study further showed that proper training, supervision, and integration of technicians into multidisciplinary care teams significantly improve medication safety outcomes. However, factors such as inadequate staffing, limited continuing education, and lack of clearly defined professional boundaries were identified as barriers to maximizing their potential.

The study concludes that empowering pharmacy technicians through professional development, regulatory support, and role expansion can enhance medication safety in healthcare settings. It recommends continuous training programs, better utilization of pharmacy technicians in clinical roles, and the establishment of standardized guidelines to strengthen their contribution to error prevention and patient safety.
