ASSESSMENT ON THE IMPACT OF USES OF CURTAINS IN HOTEL INDUSTRY

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the Study

The interior design of high-class hotels serves as a visual symphony that harmonizes luxury, comfort, and functionality to create an immersive and memorable experience for guests. Within this intricate orchestration of design elements, curtains stand out as more than mere window dressings; they play a pivotal role in shaping the ambiance and aesthetic allure of hotel interiors. The selection of curtains, encompassing aspects such as design, fabric, and functionality, is a nuanced decision that resonates throughout the entire guest experience. This study embarks on an exploration of the multifaceted role of curtains as an integral part of interior decorations in high-class hotels, delving into their impact on the overall atmosphere and guest perception within the realm of luxury hospitality.

The hospitality industry, particularly in high-class hotels, is characterized by an unwavering commitment to providing guests with an immersive and opulent environment. Every element within the hotel’s interior contributes to the overall narrative of luxury and comfort. Curtains, with their dual significance in aesthetics and functionality, become key players in this narrative. They frame the external world, control the influx of natural light, and offer a layer of privacy—contributing to the creation of an environment that transcends the ordinary.

While the importance of curtains in interior design is widely acknowledged, there exists a distinct lack of focused research on their role within the context of high-class hotels. The unique demands of luxury hospitality settings necessitate a tailored understanding of how curtains contribute to the overall ambiance and guest experience. By assessing the nuanced aspects of curtain selection, design, and maintenance in high-class hotels, this study seeks to bridge the existing gap in scholarly research and offer valuable insights for hotel owners, interior designers, and industry stakeholders.

Artistic skill of housekeeper can be executed in bed making procedures.

Bed sheets

The bed sheets have a good quality with a slight luster and made from non crease fabric so as to retain its appearance. For comfort, the texture should be soft and smooth, absorbent and free from state. More frequently used are polyester and terry cot.  Bed sheet should be large enough to be tucked in securely all around the mattress. A width cutting length of fabric for the bed sheet is approximately 8 meters. Normally for the single bed of 85 X190 cms a single sheet should be 177 X274 cm, for double sheet be 238 X 274 cm

Pillow & Pillowcases.

An ideal pillow should be neither too soft nor too hard, while selecting pillows, the house keeper must test their comfort and the longevity. With proper care, good quality may last for two years. The uses of pillow covers can double the life of the pillow .The usual size is 48X73 cm

Pillowcases are generally made from the same fabric as that of the bed linen. The longer bag type which is folded in at the open end. In order to calculate the amount of material required to stitch a pillowcase, it is necessary to measure the circumference of the pillow and add on 2 to 4 inches to allow for shrinkage and perfect fit.

Bolsters

Bolsters are elongated pillow which stretch the width of the bed. They form an under pillow and as the head does not rest on them directly. They have a gone out of fashion and now days a guest is normally given two pillows on the bed.

Blankets

These need to adhere to the body in order to provide warmth .In order to be comfortable, they should be smooth, soft and resilient and not too heavy. Wool is often blended with a synthetic fibre, a less durable alternative is made from nylon fibres, it is suitable for those who are allergic to wool. Electric blankets are uncommon in Indian and are difficult to maintain and anchor to prevent pilferage.

Duvets/quilts

It is increasingly popular in modern hotels and are fast replacing the blanket, especially on double beds. They consist of a filling sandwiched or stitched in a fabric case with a changeable cover. The fillers may be feathers of the birds or synthetic fibers. Many hotels use duvet with its cover as a bed spread, in which case a bottom sheet, pillow and duvet with cover are all that are needed to make a bed. Duvets are three times lighter than the combined weight of all the linen that covers a guest in conventional bed making.

Eiderdowns are exclusive quilts filled with down feathers from the eider duck which make them very expensive, nowadays cheaper imitations made with synthetic fibres are now available.  Quilts are generally placed under the fold of the top sheet keep them clean and avoid stains, they provide a warm but lightweight covering. The warmth duvet   is rated in „togs „, the average duvet having a rating of 10.5 togs and the warmer ones having a higher tog 11and 14  whereas the polyester fiber  filled duvet have a tog between 8 and 11

 Curtains

These often contribute more to the atmosphere of a room than any other items of furnishing .Plain heavy curtains draping to the floor are used  to create a formal setting. Short curtains made of light, brightly patterned fabrics are created an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Apart from creating the desired atmosphere, curtains give flexible control of privacy, heat, light  and to extent noise. The various fabric used for making curtains are cotton ,linen, rayon ,glass ,acrylics and silk for luxurious settings. Good curtains are usually lined and heavy curtains are interlined , the lining  helps the curtains to drape well and also to protect from sunlight and dust. The curtain materials required for windows is 15 meters .A heavy fabrics is usual for public areas and a lighter one in the guest rooms.

Bath linen comprise towels, bathmats, shower curtains:

Towel and bathmats requirements of toweling material are that it should be absorbent; the fabric should also be durable and soft. Shower curtains in hotels are waterproof these include nylon ,vinyl, fibre glass  or PVC coated materials .Whether white or coloured, the folds of plastics curtains tend to stick together when hanging wet. Nylon curtains have a better finish and can be obtained in pastel colours or white .Fiber glass curtains are very brittle but are soil resistant and resilient to fire, acid, moisture.

A Study on Problems and Challenges Faced By Small Hotel Businesses during Demonetization in Mysuru City

Abstract:

In India, Demonetization was announced by Honourable Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi on Nov 08, 2016.This is the bold step taken by our present PM towards the economic policy in Indian history to fight war against the black money, corruption, terrorism and counterfeit notes. Nov 8th is marked as the day when the largest democracy in the world declared 86% of its currency as dead. This will engender a marked fall in the use of cash transactions in India and thus pave way for the transition to a cashless economy. It would be foolish to argue that demonetization aims only at extinguishing the black money. The demonetization move causes a huge amount of uncertainty and will disrupt transaction in general to common man and all sectors of business, but especially for smaller businesses such as provision stores, vegetable vendors, hotels, restaurants and food and beverage operations etc. which run their business on the basis of cash transaction. Mysuru the name evokes images of palaces, of tranquillity, of rich culture and heritage which echoes in the fascinating tourist attractions that consist of panoramic palaces to religious attractions, exceptional gardens, glorious festivals and also extremely colourful crafts. Mysuru will unquestionably get hold of most of the hearts and minds of travellers and tourists from all around the world through the beginning which gave pace to grow the hospitality, tourism and hotel industry. According to reports, demonetization has affected Mysuru tourism sector. Over the next 2 years, the demonetization drive will have mixed effects on the hospitality industry in the country. In long term, demonetization will have a positive impact and restaurants businessbut this sector will experience a short term slowdown in growth. Therefore, the present study attempts to understand the impact of demonetization on hospitality industry in Mysuru.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN SERVICE PROVISION IN HOTELS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Taking under consideration the vast importance of tourism and hospitality industry for the economic prosperity of Greece (Atsalakis et al., 2014) and its people, hospitality management representatives have to strive to assure customer satisfaction, as the best way to assure profits and blooming business (Song et al., 2012), while at the same time young people interested in maximizing their chances of being employed in this prosperous yet highly competitive field have to be adequately trained to succeed in the global hospitality market place.

The role of foreign languages in the delivery of quality service is significant in that they are an important tool to make a guest feel at home, hence draw more brand loyalty and larger cash flows (Torres & Kline, 2013).

The current paper aims at highlighting the current needs of hospitality management in Greece in terms of efficiency in foreign languages, as the first step towards offering future hospitality employees a competitive advantage through the development of successful higher education curricula and methodologies.

Therefore, in following the international literature will be reviewed, the research process the current paper is based on will be presented and its most significant findings as well as recommended concrete actions and future research will be highlighted.

Everything that makes the guest’s everyday life more convenient, such as communication, can affect the tourist demand according to Pulina and Biagi (as cited in Chassapopoulos et al., 2014). Torres & Kline (2013) have examined the effect of hotel employees’ behavior to tourist satisfaction naming among others the importance of professionalism and friendliness as well as the ability to understand guests’ needs and effectively solve any problems, while the overall importance of service quality to customer satisfaction and retention has been proven (Deng et al., 2013).

There have been international studies examining the consumers’ language preferences. Holmqvist et al. (2014) have found that tourists who receive service in a language other than their first one are less likely to leave tips or to recommend the service to others. But even more important consumers tend to fear that they will not be correctly understood if using a second language, either because they do not trust their language proficiency level or because they judge some topics of communication as very important. According to Grewal et al. (cited in Holmqvist et al., 2014) feeling in control over the service the tourists are receiving affects their whole perception of the level of service received. Therefore, being allowed to express needs and wishes in the mother tongue relieves unnecessary tension. Language is also found to have an emotional correlation with the guests’ attitudes (Holmqvist et al., 2014) regarding a sense of community with people who share the same language, and an identification with the company that uses it making them feel at home away from home (Poon & Low, 2005).

Hotel information and reservations, customer service during holidays and after sales customer care are the key points of the tourism value chain (Weiermair, 2006) in the global market. Understanding the inbound tourist culture through the language (Zorina et al., 2014) and engaging in an open dialogue that uses both verbal and nonverbal tools to combat stereotypes and misunderstandings support a successful approach of the RATER service quality model factors, namely reliability, assurance, tangibles, empathy and responsiveness (Czaplewski et al., 2002).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The so called hospitality language, hence “all linguistic expressions which relate to and represent hospitality concerns” (Blue & Harun, 2003) throughout the stay of the guest, follows some distinctive rules, such as the use of a rather fixed vocabulary of welcoming and serving a guest and the formal behavior rules – including accepted phraseology, idioms – slang, gestures, handling problematic situations, cultural interpretations to social issues, etc. – relating to the cultural background of each guest. Therefore problems in intercultural communication may arise if sufficient use of the target language is not accompanied by the ability to understand, think and act accordingly to the target culture (Knapp et al., 1987).

Foreign language skills have indeed been identified as important managerial skills by several researchers (Agut et al., 2003; Connolly & McGing, 2006; Çizel et al., 2007).  Managers should be equipped with both communicative and intercultural competence to be able to adapt and excel in the competitive work environment and foreign languages are the way to avoid stereotypes and gain insight into foreign people’s mentality (Zorina et al., 2014). As cited in Russel et al. (2004) fluency in foreign languages is also a key element in developing business links with overseas business partners or foreign colleagues. The
