CHALLENGES FACED BY UNILAG STUDENTS IN NIGERIA

Abstract:

This study investigates the diverse challenges confronted by students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in Nigeria, offering a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted issues affecting their academic pursuits, overall well-being, and university experience. Employing a mixed-methods research approach, the study incorporates qualitative and quantitative data sources, including surveys, interviews, and academic analyses, to capture a nuanced understanding of the challenges prevalent within the UNILAG student community.

The identified challenges encompass academic pressures, infrastructural deficiencies, financial constraints, social dynamics, and mental health concerns. Academic challenges manifest in the form of rigorous academic demands, limited access to resources, and a competitive learning environment. Infrastructural deficits, including inadequate facilities and unreliable utilities, contribute to an environment that may hinder students’ academic performance and well-being.

Financial constraints pose significant barriers to students, affecting their ability to access quality education, afford essential resources, and maintain a satisfactory standard of living. Social dynamics within the university community, such as issues of diversity, inclusivity, and interpersonal relationships, present additional challenges that influence the overall student experience. Furthermore, mental health concerns, often exacerbated by academic stress and societal expectations, emerge as significant challenges affecting the overall welfare of UNILAG students.

This study not only identifies these challenges but also proposes recommendations for mitigating measures. Strategies to enhance academic support, improve infrastructure, foster a more inclusive and supportive social environment, address financial barriers, and prioritize mental health services are discussed. The findings contribute to ongoing efforts by university authorities and policymakers to create a conducive and supportive environment for students at the University of Lagos. The research underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing the challenges faced by UNILAG students to enhance the overall quality of higher education in Nigeria.
