CHANGES IN THE SETTLEMENT PATTERNS AND ARCHITECTURE IN NKANU-EAST FROM 1970 TO 2000

Abstract

This study examines the changes in settlement patterns and architecture in Nkanu-East, Nigeria, from 1970 to 2000, a period marked by significant socio-economic, political, and cultural transformations. Nkanu-East, a region rich in cultural heritage and traditional practices, experienced profound shifts in its built environment due to urbanization, population growth, and the influence of modernization. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines archival research, oral histories, and field surveys, this research documents the evolution of housing designs, land use patterns, and community layouts over the three-decade period. The findings reveal a transition from traditional mud and thatch structures to modern cement-block buildings, reflecting changes in material availability, economic conditions, and cultural preferences. Additionally, the study highlights the impact of urbanization on settlement patterns, including the expansion of residential areas, the emergence of new towns, and the decline of traditional village layouts. The research also explores the socio-cultural implications of these changes, particularly the loss of indigenous architectural practices and the adaptation of modern designs to local contexts. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the factors driving these transformations, this study contributes to the broader discourse on urbanization, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in post-colonial African societies. The findings underscore the need for policies that balance modernization with the preservation of cultural heritage in rapidly developing regions like Nkanu-East.
