COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ATTITUDE OF MALE AND FEMALE STUDENTS TO MATHEMATICS AND THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the differences in attitudes toward mathematics between male and female students in senior secondary schools and how these attitudes correlate with their academic achievements in the subject. A mixed-methods approach was employed, utilizing both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of 200 senior secondary school students across various schools. The findings indicate significant differences in attitudes, with male students displaying more positive attitudes toward mathematics compared to their female counterparts. However, academic achievements in mathematics revealed no substantial gender disparity, as both male and female students performed similarly in standardized tests. The study suggests that while gender differences in attitude exist, they do not translate into differences in academic achievement. Recommendations are made for educators to foster positive attitudes towards mathematics among female students, emphasizing the importance of supportive learning environments and tailored instructional strategies.
