CORPORATE GOALS AND EXCELLENCE IN A DEPRESSED ECONOMY THROUGH EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: A CASE OF UNITED BANK FOR AFRICA PLC, ZARIA
ABSTRACT
This work has carefully and critically assessed the impact of good managenent performance appraisal practice as a motivation factor towards attainment of corporate goals, excellence and as an effective tool for managing Managers in a depressed economy like Nigeria. This was done to test the hypothesis that good management performance appraisal practice is a motivational factor towards achieving corporate goals and excellence which was accepted finally. The survey sampled the opinion of fourty managers from the UBA branches in Zaria in respect of the company’s policies on management performance appraisal, motivation and attainment of corporate goals and excellence for the past five years (1991 – 95). The motivation for this work includes that, human resources are the most important resource in organization that needs motivation to attain corporate objectives. Organizations just like individuals will forever be in pursuit of excellence. Resources including human must be properly managed if an organization has to meaningfully develop. The developmental efforts of an organization could only he channelled to the right places, when the strength an weakness of (hat organization’s management team is known with certainly and this could be done through management performance appraisal informed the study. Other findings of this study is that improving workers performance has been a global management problem especially for the third world. The survey of UBA manager’s opinion show that there has been a good management performance appraisal practice with few lapses. Also noted was that the workers performance for the year under review has improved reasonably. The author believes that all other management variables being equal. The motivation for this achievement is good management performance appraisal practice of UBA. The study also show that the theoretical framework of the Hank’s performance appraisal effort was sound for managers’ motivation and control but the implementation needs fine tunning. The details of other useful conclusions and recommendations of this work are contained in chapter five.
