DETERMINANTS OF STUDENTS’ ENROLMENT IN TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study Vocational adopted descriptive survey research design using all the Vocational and Technical Education, Education Schools students, their parents and teachers as population. Five Vocational Nigeria. and Technical Education Schools were sampled for the study, out of which 675 subjects were randomly selected. Three instruments were developed and used for the study and, these were respectively titled “Parents, Teachers’ and students perceptions of Technical and Vocational Education Enrolment Questionnaire (PPOTVEEQ, TPOTVEEQ and SPTVEEQ). The instruments were subdivided into sections A and B. Section A elicited bio-data information on the respondents while section B elicited information on their respective perceptions of Technical and Vocational Education. The instruments were scaled after the Likert 4 type of scale of Strongly Agree(SA) 4 points, Agree(A) 3 points, Disagree(D) 2 points, and Strongly Disagree (SD) 1 point. The instrument was face and content validated. Reliability was established through a pilot test on students, parents

and teachers that were not included in the sample and this yielded “r” 0.75, 0.82, and

0.84 respectively. Findings of the study showed that, a positive and significant relationship exist between parents’ perception and enrolment into Technical and

Vocational school r=0.72; p<0.05, also students’ perception was positively related to enrolment into Technical and Vocational Schools r=0.69; p<0.05. In the same vein, teachers’ perception was significantly linearly related to students’ enrolment in Technical and Vocational schools; r=0.708; p<0.05. The relative contributions of independent variables to the dependent variable were; Teachers’ perception (β= 3.201; p<0.05) which was significant, students perception (β = -2.743; p<0.05) which was also significant and parents’ perception (β= -2.740; p<0.05) which was equally significant. The joint contribution of the factors was; R square Adjusted = 0.982 (98.2). The independent variables accounted for only 98.2% of the total variations in the dependent variable which was significant at p<0.05. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that, stakeholders in education should have positive and warm attitudes
