EFFECTS OF SUN-DRIED CASSAVA PEELS ON LIVEWEIGHT GAIN AND REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE OF RED SOKOTO DOES

ABSTRACT

Sun-dried cassava peels were used as an energy source to replace maize offal at levels of 0, (Treatment 1) 18.5, (Treatment 2) 37.0, (Treatment 3) 55.0, (Treatment 4) and 74.0% (Treatment 5) in the ration. A sixth ration (Treatment 6) comprised only cotton seed cake and common salt. Each of the six rations was fed to five Red Sokoto does prior to breeding at the rate of 1.5% of the live weight daily before being allowed to graze on native pastures in a specific paddock. In phase 1 of the experiment the daily dry matter intake (DMI)/head was not significantly different for treatments 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. The highest DM intake was in treatment 4. The crude protein intake in rations 1 to 5 decreased as the level of cassava peels in the ration increased. The efficiency of dry matter conversion (EDM) and efficiency of crude protein utilization (ECP) were best in treatment 3. The highest average daily gain (ADG) (107.1g) was recorded for treatment 4 and the least (40.8) for treatment 5. The overall ADG was 77.Og for this study. The results in phase 2 of the experiment showed that the lowest DMI of 379.2/head was recorded in treatment 5 while the highest ADG of 67.4g was obtained in treatment 3 and the least liveweight gain of 14.3g was in treatment 4. xiv The regression equations showed that CPI/Wkg 0.75 had a significantly (P<0.01) linear relationship with per cent cassava peels inclusion. Supplementation had no significant (P>0.05) effect on BTWT, LWT, WLDK and LS. Season also had no significant (P>0.05) effect on BTWT, LWT and LS of the kids. However, weight loss due to kidding (WLDK) was significantly (P<0.05) higher during the cold dry season (October – December).
