DISTRIBUTION OF HOSPITALS IN FAGGE LGA KANO STATE OF NIGERIA
Abstract
The equitable distribution of healthcare facilities is fundamental to achieving universal health coverage and ensuring access to quality medical services for all citizens. This study titled “Distribution of Hospitals in Fagge Local Government Area, Kano State of Nigeria” examines the spatial distribution, accessibility, and adequacy of hospitals across different wards in Fagge LGA. The research adopts a descriptive and geospatial analytical design, utilizing data obtained from the Kano State Ministry of Health, hospital records, and field surveys. Geographic Information System (GIS) tools were employed to map hospital locations and analyze their spatial patterns relative to population density and infrastructural networks.
Findings reveal that hospitals and health centers in Fagge are unevenly distributed, with a higher concentration in urban and economically active zones, while peripheral areas remain underserved. Factors influencing this disparity include population distribution, government policy, and infrastructural development. The study highlights the implications of such uneven distribution on healthcare accessibility and outcomes. It recommends that health planners and policymakers implement spatially balanced health infrastructure planning, prioritize underserved communities, and improve road networks to enhance healthcare delivery and reduce inequality in access.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Health facilities are vital components of any nation’s social infrastructure, as they play a critical role in the provision of essential health services and in improving the general well-being of the population. The distribution of hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities across geographic regions reflects both the efficiency of a nation’s healthcare delivery system and its commitment to achieving equitable access to medical services (Adebayo & Igbokwe, 2020). In Nigeria, disparities in the spatial distribution of hospitals have long been a concern, with urban areas typically enjoying a higher concentration of healthcare facilities compared to rural and peri-urban regions (Akinyemi & Isiugo-Abanihe, 2019).
Hospital distribution is not merely a matter of infrastructure but a crucial determinant of public health outcomes. Equitable distribution ensures accessibility, availability, and affordability of health services to all segments of society (Okafor, 2021). The World Health Organization (WHO, 2020) emphasizes that access to healthcare should not be influenced by geographic, socioeconomic, or cultural barriers. However, in many developing countries, including Nigeria, the uneven spatial distribution of hospitals has contributed to healthcare inequalities and preventable mortality (Oluwaseyi et al., 2021).
Kano State, located in Northwestern Nigeria, is among the most populous states in the country. The state’s healthcare system comprises public and private facilities, including teaching hospitals, general hospitals, and primary health centers (Ministry of Health, Kano State, 2022). Despite these efforts, disparities still exist in the spatial distribution of hospitals within the state, particularly between densely populated urban areas and less developed local government areas (Usman & Ahmed, 2020).
Fagge Local Government Area (LGA) is one of the urban centers in Kano metropolis, characterized by high population density, urban growth, and socioeconomic diversity (National Population Commission [NPC], 2019). The area hosts a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial activities, all of which increase demand for accessible and functional healthcare services. Despite this, there is limited empirical research that has examined how hospitals are spatially distributed in Fagge LGA and whether their distribution aligns with population needs and accessibility standards (Abubakar & Lawal, 2021).
Assessing the spatial distribution of hospitals in Fagge LGA is essential for effective health planning and resource allocation. This study aims to use spatial analysis to evaluate the pattern, accessibility, and equity of hospital distribution within the area, contributing to the discourse on improving healthcare delivery in urban Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The equitable distribution of hospitals is a cornerstone of achieving universal health coverage. However, in Nigeria, access to healthcare facilities remains uneven, often favoring urban centers over semi-urban or marginalized communities (Adetunji, 2020). Even within urban settings, some neighborhoods experience concentration of medical facilities, while others suffer from under-provision, leading to overcrowding and reduced quality of care (Eze & Okoro, 2021).
In Fagge LGA, despite its urban status and proximity to major government hospitals, anecdotal evidence suggests that hospital distribution is uneven, with some wards having multiple health facilities and others relying on small private clinics or distant centers (Kano State Bureau of Statistics, 2021). This uneven distribution has significant implications for emergency response, maternal health, and disease control. Residents in underserved areas may face long travel distances, increased transportation costs, and delays in accessing critical care (WHO, 2019).
The absence of spatial data and systematic analysis on hospital distribution in Fagge LGA has further compounded the problem. Policymakers and planners lack reliable information to make data-driven decisions regarding where to establish new hospitals or upgrade existing ones (Ibrahim & Musa, 2022). This research, therefore, seeks to fill this knowledge gap by mapping and analyzing the spatial distribution of hospitals in Fagge LGA, identifying inequities, and providing recommendations for improved health service planning.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this study is to investigate the distribution of hospitals in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
The specific objectives are to:
Identify and map the existing hospitals in Fagge LGA.
Examine the spatial pattern of hospital distribution using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques.
Assess the relationship between hospital locations and population density in Fagge LGA.
Identify areas with inadequate hospital coverage and recommend strategies for equitable healthcare distribution.
1.4 Research Questions
What are the types and locations of hospitals in Fagge LGA?
What is the spatial pattern of hospital distribution in the area?
How does the distribution of hospitals relate to the population density in Fagge LGA?
Which areas are underserved in terms of hospital accessibility?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it provides spatial and demographic data that can guide health planners and policymakers in improving healthcare service delivery in Fagge LGA. Secondly, it highlights areas of inequality and helps decision-makers allocate resources more efficiently (Onokerhoraye, 2020). The study also contributes to academic literature by demonstrating the use of GIS tools in assessing healthcare accessibility, thus providing a model for similar urban centers across Nigeria (Adebayo & Igbokwe, 2020).
Furthermore, understanding the spatial distribution of hospitals can aid in disaster response planning, emergency preparedness, and the implementation of public health interventions such as vaccination campaigns and epidemic control (WHO, 2022). In sum, the findings will serve as an evidence base for achieving equitable and sustainable healthcare provision in Kano State and beyond.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, covering both public and private hospitals within its boundaries. It assesses the spatial distribution, accessibility, and relationship of hospital locations with population distribution. Other health facilities such as pharmacies and maternity homes are excluded from the main analysis.
1.7 Limitations of the Study
The study may be limited by incomplete or outdated hospital records, difficulty in accessing private health facility data, and the availability of high-resolution population and spatial maps. Despite these challenges, efforts will be made to ensure data accuracy through field verification and consultation of official sources.
