IMPACT OF REFINERY EFFLUENTS ON WATER QUALITY OF ROMI STREAM IN KADUNA, NIGERIA THE EFFECTS OF THE EFFLUENTS OF KADUNA REFINING AND PETROCHEMICAL COMPANY, KADUNA, NIGERIA
The effects of the effluents of Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, Kaduna, Nigeria on the water quality of the receiving Romi stream during non-production period was studied for 10 months, from May 2007 to February 2008. Higher levels than stipulated standards were observed for some physico-chemical parameters; TSS (60.53 – 118.70 mg/ml), turbidity (13.73 – 30.61 NTU), BOD (30.75 – 52.73 mg/ml) and COD (226.15 – 276.41 m g/m l). Tem perature, pH, oil and grease and TDS w ere within set standards while DO (6.76 – 7.60 mg/ml), alkalinity 35.33 – 45.27 mg/ml) and TPH (0.38 – 2.40 mg/ml) were observed. Seasonal changes followed the same trend with higher values in the dry season than rainy season. The microbial loads were THC (67.46 × 103- 203.72 × 103 cfu/ml), TCC (11.9 × 103 – 32.96 × 103 cfu/ml) and TFC (108.22 × 103- 297.08 x 103cfu/ml) with higher values for THC and TFC in dry season than rainy season. TCC was higher for rainy season than dry season. The input of the refinery effluents impacted negatively on the water quality of the receiving stream .
