IMPROVING TECHNIQUES FOR INLAND ACQUACULTURE IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Inland aquaculture plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance food security, generate income, and promote sustainable livelihoods. Despite its potential, the sector faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, poor management practices, limited access to quality inputs, and environmental issues. This study aims to explore and develop improved techniques for inland aquaculture in Nigeria, focusing on enhancing production efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.
The research involves a comprehensive analysis of current aquaculture practices, identifying key bottlenecks and areas for improvement. It also examines innovative techniques and technologies that can be adapted to the Nigerian context, such as advanced feeding strategies, water quality management, and disease control measures. Additionally, the study explores the potential for integrating aquaculture with other agricultural practices to maximize resource use and minimize environmental impact.
Through field studies, interviews with aquaculture practitioners, and a review of best practices from other countries, this research proposes a set of recommendations aimed at improving the overall productivity and sustainability of inland aquaculture in Nigeria. The findings are expected to contribute to policy formulation, capacity building, and the adoption of best practices within the sector, ultimately leading to increased fish production, higher incomes for farmers, and enhanced food security in Nigeria.
This study underscores the importance of adopting innovative and sustainable aquaculture practices to meet the growing demand for fish in Nigeria while addressing the environmental and economic challenges faced by the sector.
