KNOWLEDGE, PERCEPTION, AND UTILIZATION OF THE SERVICES OF TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS AMONG WOMEN ATTENDING ANTENATAL CARE
Abstract:
This research explores the knowledge, perception, and utilization of the services of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) among women attending antenatal care in a specific region. Despite advancements in modern healthcare, many women, particularly in resource-constrained settings, continue to seek the assistance of traditional birth attendants during childbirth. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing women’s awareness of TBAs, their perceptions of the quality of services provided, and the extent to which they engage with traditional birth attendants during the antenatal period.
A mixed-methods approach will be employed, incorporating surveys and in-depth interviews with pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics. The quantitative phase will involve structured surveys to assess demographic characteristics, knowledge levels, and perceptions of traditional birth attendants. The qualitative phase will explore women’s experiences and decision-making processes through in-depth interviews, providing context and depth to the quantitative findings.
The research seeks to contribute valuable insights into the complex dynamics surrounding the utilization of traditional birth attendants in the context of contemporary antenatal care. By understanding women’s knowledge, perceptions, and decision-making factors, the study aims to inform healthcare policies and interventions that can bridge the gap between traditional and modern maternal health practices, ultimately improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. Findings from this research may guide the development of targeted educational programs and interventions to enhance the integration of traditional birth attendants into formal healthcare systems, fostering safer childbirth practices and maternal well-being.
Chapter One:
Introduction
1.1 Background
Maternal healthcare is a critical aspect of public health, and the utilization of skilled birth attendants is widely recognized as a key factor in reducing maternal mortality and improving neonatal outcomes. However, in many resource-constrained settings, traditional birth attendants (TBAs) continue to play a significant role in providing maternity care. The persistence of TBA services raises questions about the knowledge, perceptions, and utilization patterns of women attending antenatal care regarding these traditional caregivers. Understanding the dynamics surrounding the coexistence of traditional and modern maternal healthcare practices is essential for developing targeted interventions to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
1.2 Rationale
Despite advancements in modern healthcare services, many pregnant women, particularly in rural and underserved areas, opt for the services of traditional birth attendants. The reasons for this choice may be multifaceted, involving cultural, socio-economic, and accessibility factors. It is crucial to explore the knowledge women have about traditional birth attendants, their perceptions of the quality of services provided, and the determinants influencing their decision to engage with TBAs while also seeking antenatal care from formal health facilities.
1.3 Statement of the Problem
The coexistence of traditional and modern maternal healthcare practices presents challenges and opportunities for improving maternal health outcomes. There is a need to investigate the extent to which women attending antenatal care are aware of the services offered by traditional birth attendants, their perceptions of these services, and the factors influencing their decisions to utilize TBA services alongside formal healthcare facilities. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies that acknowledge and integrate the role of traditional birth attendants within the broader maternal healthcare framework.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The primary objectives of this research are:
a) To assess the knowledge levels of women attending antenatal care regarding the services offered by traditional birth attendants.
b) To explore the perceptions of women regarding the quality and effectiveness of services provided by traditional birth attendants.
c) To examine the factors influencing the utilization of traditional birth attendant services among women attending antenatal care.
d) To identify potential areas for intervention and improvement in maternal healthcare practices by understanding the coexistence of traditional and modern childbirth practices.
1.5 Research Questions
The study will seek answers to the following research questions:
a) What is the level of knowledge among women attending antenatal care regarding the services provided by traditional birth attendants?
b) How do women perceive the quality and effectiveness of services offered by traditional birth attendants?
c) What factors influence the utilization of services provided by traditional birth attendants among women attending antenatal care?
1.6 Significance of the Study
This research holds significance in contributing to the body of knowledge surrounding maternal healthcare practices, particularly in contexts where traditional birth attendants continue to play a significant role. By understanding women’s knowledge, perceptions, and utilization patterns related to TBAs, policymakers, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders can develop targeted interventions that bridge the gap between traditional and modern maternal healthcare, ultimately improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
1.7 Scope and Delimitations
This study focuses on women attending antenatal care in a specific geographical region, exploring their knowledge, perceptions, and utilization of the services of traditional birth attendants. The research is delimited to a defined population, and findings may not be generalized to other regions with distinct cultural and healthcare contexts.
