ABSTRACT
Motivation is and would continue to remain as one of the cornerstone Of management, the significance of motivation can best be appreciated by the volume of work done in this area by contemporary management scholars. With all the theories propounded by management scholars, many managers are still having problem in managing their subordinates effectively. Some managers find it difficult to recognise the difference between how to handle tools and workmen. Some managers rule instead of manage, they dictate instead of discuss, they hit instead of listen, they fire
instead of manage the weakness of the subordinates. It is the objective of this research work to examine some of the
theories of motivation and apply them to the Federal College of Education (Technical) Bichi. This work is timely because it was undertaken during the dispensation of a Military Government which announced a wage increase
and within four months the same government announced a wage cut by nearly 50%. This was followed by a general outcry from public servants who were hard hit by the decision. On the other hand state civil servants embarked on an indefinite strike action in response of the wage issue.
