Background
Fungal infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised individuals, including patients with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, and those undergoing chemotherapy (Brown et al., 2012). Immunosuppression increases susceptibility to opportunistic fungi such as Candida, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, and Mucorales, which can cause systemic infections with high fatality rates (Pfaller & Diekema, 2007).
Histopathological evaluation is critical for definitive diagnosis, allowing identification of fungal morphology, tissue invasion patterns, and host immune response (Kauffman, 2006). Coupled with microbiological culture and molecular diagnostics, histopathology informs clinical decision-making and antifungal therapy (Kojic & Darouiche, 2004).
Despite advancements in molecular diagnostics, histopathology remains indispensable, especially in resource-limited settings, for rapid identification of invasive fungal infections and assessment of tissue pathology (Gupta et al., 2017).
