ENHANCING PROFESSIONAL RELEVANCE THROUGH DIGITAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT-THE CASE OF ACCOUNTANTS IN A TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN ECONOMY
ABSTRACT
In today’s rapidly evolving, technology-driven economy, the accounting profession faces significant transformation driven by automation, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital financial platforms. This study examines how digital skills development enhances the professional relevance, employability, and performance of accountants in a technologically advanced business environment. The research adopts a descriptive survey design to investigate the extent to which accountants in Nigeria are equipped with essential digital competencies such as data analytics, cloud accounting, cybersecurity awareness, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, and automated audit tools. Primary data were collected from practicing accountants across audit firms, financial institutions, and corporate organizations.
Findings reveal that digital skills have become indispensable for improving efficiency, accuracy, decision-making, and competitiveness in accounting practice. Results further show that accountants who actively engage in digital upskilling demonstrate higher adaptability to technological changes and improved career advancement prospects. However, challenges such as limited access to professional training, resistance to technological change, high cost of digital tools, and knowledge gaps in advanced analytic techniques hinder optimal digital adoption. The study concludes that continuous digital skills development is critical for maintaining the relevance of accountants in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It recommends strategic investments in training, integration of digital competencies into accounting education, and stronger collaboration between professional bodies and industry stakeholders to support accountants’ preparedness for future technological disruptions.
