ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS- A CASE STUDY OF BENIN CITY
Abstract:
Road traffic accidents (RTAs) represent a significant public health concern and social challenge, contributing to a substantial loss of life, injury, and economic resources globally. This study focuses on the specific context of Benin City, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the patterns, causes, and consequences of road traffic accidents in this urban setting.
The research employs a case study methodology, utilizing a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze available accident data, conduct on-site investigations, and engage with key stakeholders such as traffic management authorities, law enforcement agencies, and healthcare providers. The study period spans several years, allowing for the examination of trends and variations in RTAs.
The findings shed light on the demographic characteristics of individuals involved in accidents, the types of vehicles most commonly implicated, prevailing environmental conditions, and the critical factors contributing to accidents. Furthermore, the research explores the implications of RTAs on the healthcare system, emergency response mechanisms, and the socio-economic fabric of Benin City.
The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform evidence-based interventions, policy development, and community awareness programs aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of road traffic accidents in Benin City. The outcomes of this research contribute not only to the local context but also to the broader discourse on road safety and accident prevention in urban environments.
