STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN THE NIGER DELTA AREA OF NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the relationship between strategic management accounting and financial performance of deposit money banks in Niger Delta Area of Nigeria. The study adopted the quasi-experimental research design. The population for this study comprised of twenty-two (22) deposit money banks in Niger Delta Area listed in Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). The sample of 21 accountants and senior staff were selected using the simple random sampling technique. The instrument of data collection was a structured questionnaire item titled: ‘Strategic Management Accounting and Financial Performance Questionnaire (SMAFPQ). Analysis was done using descriptive statistics such as percentage, mean and Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation Coefficient. The finding of the study showed that there is a significant relationship between activity-based costing and return on asset of deposit money banks in Niger Delta Area of Nigeria; there is a significant relationship between activity-based costing and return on equity of deposit money banks in Niger Delta Area of Nigeria; amongst others. The study concluded that strategic management accounting provides accurate and timely information to various aspects of an enterprise’s decision making needs, including strategic costing, target costing, competitors accounting, consumer accounting, strategic decision, planning, control and performance management, which in turn influence the performance of organizations. It was recommended that, deposit money banks should consider adopting effective Activity-based costing, supply chain management, as well as consistent performance evaluation process so as to increase level of financial performance.
