STUDIES ON ADAPTABILITY OF ADVANCED GENERATIONS OF WILD AND CULTIVATED TOMATO CROSSES IN A HUMID ENVIRONMENT

ABSTRACT

Breeding for tomatoes that will adapt in humid environments associated with high rainfall, temperature and humidity was the aim of this research. Four tomato parents; Roma (R), Wild (W), Local (L), Tropica (T) and three advanced crosses between the Wild and other parents (R x W, L x W, and T x W) were evaluated for agronomic traits performance in the Department of Crop Science, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Nigeria. The field experimental design used was randomized complete block design. The results of the principal component analysis across the six advanced generations (F7 – F12) revealed that sum of the variations captured in principal components 1 and 2 ranged from 79.14% to 99.49 %. Number of flowers/plant, number of fruits/plant and number of trusses/plant that exhibited consistent high loading factors across the generations were underpinned highly important in breeding for tomato in humid environments. The genotype by trait analysis revealed that Roma x Wild cross was the best performer for fresh fruit weight and also showed good performance in other traits in all the advanced generations. This hybrid will be suitable for humid environments.
