GENDER AND TEST ANXIETY AS CAUSAL FACTORS FOR EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EDUCATION DISTRICT SIX IN LAGOS STATE
Abstract
Examination malpractice remains a persistent issue in Nigerian secondary schools, undermining educational standards and impacting the integrity of academic assessment. This study investigates the roles of gender and test anxiety as contributing factors to examination malpractice among students in selected secondary schools within Education District Six, Lagos State. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study examines the prevalence and patterns of test anxiety and assesses whether gender differences influence students’ tendencies toward examination malpractice. Data were collected from both questionnaires and focus group discussions involving students and educators to gain insight into the root causes and potential gender-based predispositions toward test-related anxiety and malpractice behaviors. The study’s findings reveal significant correlations between heightened test anxiety, gender, and examination malpractice, indicating that female students exhibit different anxiety patterns compared to male students, which, in turn, affects their likelihood of engaging in malpractice. The research underscores the need for targeted interventions, such as anxiety management programs and ethics education, to address these issues and foster an academically honest environment. This study contributes to understanding how psychological factors and demographic variables interact to influence examination integrity, ultimately informing policies aimed at reducing malpractice rates in Nigerian secondary schools.
