THE OCCURENCE OF HEAVY METALS IN GILLS, MUSCLES AND LIVER OF CHRYSICHTHYS NIGRODIGITATUS

Abstract

This study investigates the occurrence and concentration of heavy metals in the gills, muscles, and liver of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, a commercially important freshwater fish species. Samples were collected from a designated aquatic environment and analyzed for key heavy metals, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn), using standard atomic absorption spectrometry techniques. The analysis revealed varying concentrations of these metals across the different tissues, with the liver showing the highest accumulation levels, followed by the gills and muscles. The bioaccumulation patterns are discussed in relation to the potential health risks for both aquatic life and human consumers. This study underscores the importance of continuous monitoring of heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems to prevent the risk of bioaccumulation and its implications for food safety and public health.
