WIND ENERGY POTENTIAL ASSESSMENT IN SOUTHWEST REGION NIGERIA

Abstract

The increasing global demand for clean and sustainable energy sources has heightened the need to explore renewable energy alternatives, particularly in developing nations like Nigeria. This study focuses on assessing the wind energy potential in the southwest region of Nigeria, with the aim of identifying viable locations for wind power generation. Meteorological data, including wind speed and direction, were collected from various weather stations across the region over a ten-year period. The data were analyzed using statistical tools and wind energy assessment models, such as Weibull distribution and power density analysis, to evaluate the wind resource availability and its feasibility for electricity generation. Results indicate that certain locations within the region exhibit average wind speeds ranging between 4.0 m/s and 7.5 m/s at hub heights of 10 to 50 meters, highlighting promising potential for small to medium-scale wind energy projects. The study also identifies key challenges, including seasonal variability and technical limitations, while proposing strategies for effective integration of wind energy into the regional energy mix. These findings provide critical insights for policymakers, investors, and energy stakeholders in harnessing wind energy to enhance Nigeria’s energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Chapter One

Introduction

The global quest for sustainable and renewable energy sources has intensified in recent decades due to increasing energy demand, environmental concerns, and the need to mitigate climate change. Wind energy, a prominent form of renewable energy, has gained significant attention due to its abundance, cost-effectiveness, and minimal environmental impact (Kaldellis & Zafirakis, 2011). In Nigeria, the growing energy deficit and over-reliance on fossil fuels necessitate the exploration of alternative energy sources, including wind energy, to meet the country’s energy needs sustainably.

Background of the Study

Nigeria is endowed with diverse energy resources, including crude oil, natural gas, hydro, solar, and wind. However, the country’s energy sector has been plagued by inefficiencies, inadequate supply, and limited access, particularly in rural areas (Akinbami et al., 2003). The southwest region of Nigeria, comprising states such as Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti, holds considerable potential for wind energy development due to its geographical and climatic conditions. Preliminary studies suggest that wind speeds in this region are suitable for small to medium-scale wind power generation (Fadare, 2008).

Despite its potential, the contribution of wind energy to Nigeria’s energy mix remains negligible. This underscores the need for a comprehensive assessment of wind energy potential in the southwest region to determine its viability and inform policy and investment decisions. By leveraging available meteorological data and advanced wind resource assessment tools, this study aims to bridge the knowledge gap and provide actionable insights for stakeholders.

Statement of the Problem

Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity is insufficient to meet the growing demand, resulting in frequent power outages and reliance on alternative energy sources such as diesel generators. This situation has adverse economic, environmental, and social implications. While renewable energy sources like wind have been identified as viable solutions, their potential remains largely untapped in Nigeria (Aliyu et al., 2013).

The southwest region, with its coastal and semi-coastal landscapes, experiences relatively high wind speeds compared to other parts of the country. However, there is limited empirical data and detailed analysis to support large-scale wind energy development in the region. The lack of a comprehensive wind energy potential assessment hinders the integration of wind energy into the regional and national energy mix, thus perpetuating the energy crisis.

Objectives of the Study

The primary objective of this study is to assess the wind energy potential in the southwest region of Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:

Analyze historical wind speed and direction data to identify high-potential areas for wind energy development.

Evaluate the feasibility of wind power generation using established wind energy models such as the Weibull distribution.

Examine the technical, economic, and environmental challenges associated with wind energy development in the region.

Propose strategies to optimize wind energy utilization for sustainable energy generation in Nigeria.

Research Questions

To achieve the stated objectives, this study seeks to address the following research questions:

What are the wind speed and direction patterns in the southwest region of Nigeria?

Which areas in the region have the highest potential for wind energy development?

What are the technical and economic feasibility factors for wind energy generation in the region?

What strategies can be implemented to overcome challenges and promote wind energy development?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides a scientific basis for harnessing wind energy in the southwest region of Nigeria, contributing to the diversification of the country’s energy sources. Second, it supports policymakers and investors in making informed decisions regarding renewable energy development. Third, the study addresses environmental concerns by promoting a clean and sustainable energy alternative to fossil fuels, thereby contributing to Nigeria’s commitment to global climate change mitigation efforts (IPCC, 2021).

Furthermore, this study adds to the existing body of knowledge on renewable energy in Nigeria, serving as a reference for future research and development in wind energy technologies.

Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to the assessment of wind energy potential in the southwest region of Nigeria. The study focuses on analyzing meteorological data, including wind speed and direction, from selected locations within the region. The technical, economic, and environmental aspects of wind energy development are also evaluated to provide a holistic understanding of its feasibility.

Limitations of the Study

While this study aims to provide comprehensive insights into wind energy potential in the southwest region, it is subject to certain limitations. These include the availability and accuracy of meteorological data, the reliance on secondary data sources, and the exclusion of other renewable energy sources from the analysis. Additionally, the study does not cover the detailed design and implementation of wind energy systems, focusing instead on the assessment of potential and feasibility.
